Was Gaara aware that Naruto also had a tailed-beast? In part 1.

No in the beginning gaara didn't even acknowledge him, even in the beginning his teammates didn't know he was a tailed beast

I was just watching the hospital scene where Gaara was gonna kill Lee in his sleep. Gaara mentions he has evil in him. Then Naruto says he has the real thing in him. Then Gaara says I too have a spirit, an old sage spirit. So I wasnt sure if Gaara was sensing the 9tails or if it was just poor choice of words for the script.
