It's funny though, it's not even Sasuke the character that saved it. It was rivalry. Replace him with Neji as Naruto's rival and the story would move along just fine.

First of all, Sasuke was born in Uchiha clan and having this ancestry gave him greater chakra obviously. But besides that, Sasuke whole his life is motivated to train and practice. In childhood he wanted to become good as Itachi and receive dad's attention. Later he wanted to become better to become stronger than Itachi and kill him. After that, he needed more power to attack Konoha. In the end he got EMS to fight Naruto. And now he is in his prime strength to protect daughter and world.
