The Movie or the character? Since your OP pointed out characterization, I'll go with your ideas.
But yeah, that was one of my favorite scenes too. I think that Boruto has shown to be a rather dynamic character thus far. Started off as a normal child, then his father became Hokage and he started to act bratty towards his father missing special events, and just overall spending time with their family.
At the same time, while being prodigal, Boruto despised hard work and saw it as an obstacle he didn't need. Through Sasuke's training and wisdom, and through witnessing his own failures, Boruto was able to come to the resolution that hard work is what truly made a shinobi. Basically you can't pass through anything by cheating, or not giving it your all.
He later, like you said, vows to travel a different path from both his Grandfather and Father, by becoming a shinobi like Sasuke who protects in the shadows. Then 'this' Boruto we see, is the man who become this shinobi in the flash forward, the stoic and calm character. He's just constantly turning and developing, and it's just cool.
Out of the next generation, I can say without a fact that he's the most developed thus far. And I'm not even counting flash forward-Bolt.

> When Boruto stated to Naruto that he could utilize three elemental natures, and use the shadow clone jutsu, without training.
> Boruto and Sarada talking about the panda/bear thing, thought that was hilarious
> Sasuke v. Kinshiki
> Sarada and Mitsuki noting that Boruto rarely smiles unless he's with his sister.
> Boruto being a lazy shinobi was a nice feature for an interesting characteristic, especially when main characters these days are just hard workers. Goku, Naruto, Luffy, Deku, etc.
> Naruto and Sasuke smiling at each other like they were old friends again.
> Naruto and Sasuke explaining to each other that they saw themselves in Boruto. Naruto saw Sasuke in Boruto, while Sasuke saw Naruto in Boruto. Thought was interesting.
> Sasuke becoming Boruto's Shisou
> Boruto trying to punch Sasuke :lol
> Sasuke tripping Boruto when he was ambushed :lol
> Konohamaru teaching Boruto the Rasengan
> Boruto struggling in the Chunin Exams, via personal conflict.
> Shikidai v. Boruto was pretty nice.
> Naruto sacrificing himself for the Village
> Boruto realizing how stupid he was for not understanding his father sooner.
> Sasuke and Boruto's conversation in the Hokage Office. That was lit.
> Boruto putting on Sasuke's hitae. One of my favorite moments, almost a tear jerker.
> Momoshiki v. Sasuke/Naruto was just awesome.
> Boruto slicing off one of Momoshiki's Rinnegan with that Master/Student combo was just :toodamnbeastly
> Boruto defeating Momoshiki with that Father/Son Rasengan + Him standing up in that light where Naruto/Sasuke watched his back as Naruto's Part 1 Jacket fluttered in the wind. Damn I gotta watch this movie again :lol
> and the last one is Boruto obviously saying he wants to follow in Sasuke's footsteps.
