Hashirama fought Madara in base for awhile before he was pushed to SM too.. The body can take more then the eyes an sages don't go all out to win only to match/stalemate (Naruto/Hashirama)

Indra's incarnates had to steal to keep up with the body an that's why when it came down to the grit they lost.. The body is key not the eyes.. (what good are eyes if there's no body to wield them)
