Naruto did fight a stronger Gaara but the situations were much different , Gaara didn't have his Auto Defense which would've protected him from Base Naruto's clones.

His auto defense wouldn't protect him from a Kurama powered 2K Combo if Gaara covered in his initial Jinchuuriki from needed to release Shukaku in order to survive.

I doubt the kunai strategy would work. Kimi in CM2 does something similar with his bone but the armor was only cracked. Granted it's an advanced version of Gaara but I'm not sure there are any upgrades that can be made to the sand armor.
Also I think you're over rating the stamina he loses from sand armor. He was on the defensive almost throughout the Lee fight and yet he walked away without any hint of exhaustion. Heck it seems he was ready to go for another round when Lee stood up

as he was looking to kill Lee there but was interrupted. This implies it isn't as draining as Kankuro made it seem seeing as Gaara was casually wearing it for no reason.
Also doesn't Naruto have a time and capacity limit on his borrowed Kurama chakra? He seemingly exhausts it when he summons bunta, exhausts it against Neji and Gaara in the CE finals and even runs out of time with it in VoTE. (

Using clones to try and do a Naruto combo might not work because it's a multi directional attack removing the need for the sand to jump from place to place. It simply erects a wall around Gaara. Sure Naruto is fast but his combo utilizes

. The friction would definitely reduce the speed a little and if his speed is similar to 5G Lee's, that reduction in speed is probably enough time for the sand shield to set up itself in Gaara's vicinity.
