I've always given this particular matchup to Pain. They're definitely equal opponents but the Pain set-up means that any battle against the six of them will never be over quickly. Naruto, Konoha, the 5 strongest Toad Masters and the Kyuubi were all needed to whittle Pain down- and that still took ages and every ounce of chakra and energy.

Itachi doesn't have that much, unless genjutsu works on shared vision (which i'm pretty sure Jiraiya's Genjutsu disproves) then Pain overpowers and perserveres.

I don't know much about Nagato but I imagine him losing to Itachi just as quickly as the fight happened in Edo form.

Oh, especially if he has to work out Pain's secret. I mean he's a genius so ofc he will but it's still another wall to get past.

I've always looked at Nagato losing in edo as a plot armor for Naruto, Bee and Itachi.

When you think about it, it becomes apparent that they only won thanks to plot.

I mean I don't see how Totsuka Blade managed to get Nagato that easily as far away as they were.

Nagato should've been able to pinpoint Itachi's location through the smoke if Itachi could pinpoint Nagato through the smoke.

The projectile shouldn't have worked because Nagato's summons should've been able to see those projectiles before they reached their eyes.
