It's not just the appearance but also the character that I like about Itachi.

The only thing that the original design had was that it made Itachi look more intimidating. The final work of Itachi made him iconic, from the tear troughs, the crow clones and his sinister presence(when he was a villain).

This looks something more like Iruka's original design. I'm glad kishi changed that.

As to the concept design: Try every anime cliche wanderer ever. Ryu (Street Fighter), Domon (G Gundam), Kenshin (Samurai X), Yamcha (DB), Strider (Capcom).

He'd probably have a red headband or scarf if Kishi kept that design.

I don't even like Itachi and even I can admit that the second design is infinitely better. Also, it's a basic creative process. Designs change all the time. Nothing new.
