So Ashura was about to get killed by Indra's susanoo, and then randomly awakened his sage of six paths powers. Literally you could have rewritten the filler story so Indra develops his powers then Ashura get the sage powers, and then his brother becomes jealous and starts to listen to black zetsu because he wants more power. Then have that Ashura is similar to his father and tries to solve problems with the help of others instead of Indra's way of doing by yourself. At least that would make more sense.

Ashura had just received power from Hagoromo; he just didn't activate it fully until Indra's PS forced him to use it.

We have plenty of examples in this series of Shinobi who "instinctively" awaken powers in moments of need; at least with RSM, the power-up includes an innate mastery of chakra manipulation.

Ashura simply needed the help of others because he had none when he was young. he didnt awaken it like Indra but he trained for it.

In the process, he made friends who help him and he help in return.

He wasnt given any power because he was pathetic. he simply trained and worked hard at it until his powers matured and by that point he was more powerful than ever.

WRONG...hagoromo never stated anything about his power...he just stated that he left the power of ninshu to ashura

The power Hagoromo entrusted was political power not literal power, being leader of Ninshuu grants influence over all the Sage's followers.

It says in the manga Ashura's power bloomed after hard training and rivalled Indra's. The Sage never gave any special power-up, RSM is Ashura's own power gained through hard work.

Ninshuu is chakra sharing which is essientally power share.
