I think this is a preety interesting thing, because of this sakumo was been hated by the village and the comrades he saved but what kind of mission was that? I think i know what...
Judging by the villagers and his comrades hating sakumo i think this was the time when the prime A and almost prime bee is, as well as the elite ninjas that took the second hokage's life. so basically yeah the leaf was at war with the cloud hidden village, and sakumo's mission and his comrades, their mission was to get the other konoha's ninjas back to leaf, but as they went further in to the enemies territory and thing getting so dangerous sakumo ordered a retreat, the soldiers with him was ready to die but a order is an order and without their commander its preety pointless to die so yeah they retreat, days later those konoha ninjas was slaughtered by the cloud, the news spread as fast as minato, and yeah it started to make sakumo regret it. But why he choose to retreat you ask? His a great ninja, he doesnt look like affraid of death but sakumo got something to return to, its kakashi. But the guilt and sadness seeing the family those soldiers left made sakumo kill himself. Its not their hate but probably the guilt and sadness that he didnt save those ninjas think about the kids looking at him crying, their wives, their son. He kept this inside until he explode, sakumo knows that feeling since his wife died.
