Wouldn't be surprised if he was, he was pretty much telling them what to do in the previous chapters.
I don't think that it's his commandment that makes him the leader though, if so then that would've meant that Meliodas would've had that commandment which sort of makes betrayal against the demon king impossible?

Overall, decent chapter, would've liked to see some more OP punches thrown around though, those panels weren't really befitting to the "strongest men".

Something must have happened, I think Meliodas may have won as Escanor wouldn't need to hide and keep aces up his sleeve if he won the first time. I dunno, maybe if it's just Meliodas he'd fight him, but Merlin was there too.
Besides, Escanor still thinks he's the strongest, regardless of the fact that he's "under Meliodas".
