Or....Sasuke didn't really want to kill him but thought he had to in order to do things the way that seemed most logical but changed his mind during the fight and that's what justified Naruto being Hokage and the equity during the match when they were at the height of their power.

Neither of them had the intent to kill each other, Sasuke was just talking big but admitted he didn't have the resolve to cut his bonds. And the only Rikudou feat Sasuke performed was creation of bijuu Susanoo and use of 3 Paths, he still needed time to master his Rinnegan.

Eh, aside from better mastering the ability to absorb chakra while casting jutsu, Sasuke used his techniques the best that he could. Bijuu Susano'o allowed Sasuke to match Naruto's raw power, which is what the fight came down to.

In any fight amongst these upper-tier characters, there are always ways things could go differently, so they always seem "nerfed." Kishi essentially removed all limitations.

Naruto had just as many additional powers (that he's actually shown, unlike the Rinnegan abilities that we just presume Sasuke can control).

Frankly, I just wish that Naruto vs. Sasuke had been at least twice as long, so that we could see them truly use all of their abilities on each other. They basically rushed to the end; both of them had countless ways to avoid enemy attacks, either through speed, teleportation, clones, etc... but they just decided to ram big attacks into each other and force a conclusion.

Sasuke dint had his sword because it fell in to the lava but even if he did had it wouldnt make any harm to naruto and the reason why he was stabed in gaiden its because he had his guard down (because whe already saw 4th raikage taking that sword easily.

When he had the chance to kill him with chidori he deliberately de-activated his Sharingan which allowed Naruto to counter. And after the fight he admits he didn't have the will to cut his bonds. All his talk about killing Naruto was his way of running away from his feelings.
