Even Kid Sasuke couldn't track Base Gai's movements. Granted, he wasn't using the Sharingan but he's still at the higher end of the Genin in terms of vitesse. So there's no way Gaara's going to be able to do anything, or even be able to acknowledge his own buttrape.

The reason why Temari says Gaara cannot be hurt by anyone lies with this Armor of Sand. Just as the name implies, he wears the sand over his whole body like an armor, thus boosting his defensive ability. However, this jutsu Gaara activates willingly is highly chakra-consuming, on top of which it is inferior to the Sand Shield* in defensive ability. Proper, clever use of the Sand Shield and Armor is precisely what the Absolute Defense is about.

Lee hit Gaara multiple times. But despite all that, he wasn't able to entirely breach Gaara's armor of sand which is stated to be weaker than the shield of sand. Actually, Gaara began walking away at the end as if he hadn't just been in an intense fight.

The point i'm trying to make here is Base Gai can't possibly stomp CE Gaara. He's fast and strong..true. But Base Gai's strength and speed =/= 5th Gate. Even if it is..which is impossible..(seriously) he probably wouldn't be able to breach Gaara's armor of sand.
How then could he have dispersed Gaara's sand easily?
It might seem like i'm biased (I probably am.. Gaara is my fav. But i won't mind anyone proving this otherwise) but we see Gaara looking to kill Lee here:

But in the bottom panel it seems like he's struck a wall seeing as his sand isn't advancing.

What i actually understand from this scan is...Gaara realizing his sand wasn't advancing probably stopped his attack to get a view of what was stopping it. He's then shocked to see Gai standing there.
I know..but we have to realize the anime made it that Gai swiped his hand. The manga actually doesn't show that and if he did swipe his hand from his left to his right:

Why is the sand in red there? And why is the sand in blue shaped like it was sliced in a slanting manner?
Now one could ask "Then why was Gai in that posture?" Well, i think to make himself bigger in shielding Lee..After all the sand Gaara was sending had a wide range yes?
Bias might be clouding my judgement..so i wouldn't mind anyone trying to disprove the bottom part of my post. One thing that is definitely sure though is that Base Gai isn't for any reason 'stomping' Gaara.
Low diff dude. A Base Gai slice was able to push sand away, no I wouldn't say it is a strong as Chidori because Chdori will pierce his attack and he will probably lose his hand, but it's definitely stronger than Gaara's Sand Burial. Dyanamic entry will also work. All of his techniques will probably be stronger than Gaara pre Bijuu Mode.
True. Gaara doesn't stand a chance vs Gai. Even with the lotus restricted. Gai is just to fast and strong even without gates.
