The Hyuga was not the strongest. They were barely relevant until Neji came along. Hell, Obito, Shisui, and Itachi (Only prominent Uchiha clan members at the time) and the other clan members could've wiped out that whole clan. And don't lie.

Even after the massacre, they weren't the strongest since Madara, Obito, and Sasuke were still around. Hell, the Hyuga strongest member got soloed by sticks.
