About why shanks had the Gum Gum DF? do you think he was going to use it for himself? maybe he had it because it was Gol. D Rogers? I'm just not sure why he'd leave a DF sitting around for someone else to take. When Luffy ate it he seemed to be pretty upset like he was saving it for something.

That's an interesting question, I never really thought about it before, but now I'm left to wonder...

Sure Oda has something planned for this though. He always does.

Maybe he was upset because of how much money they could've got from selling the devil fruit. The booze they would afford and the partying they could've done.

If so why was it just sitting in a box on the bar? I'm sure he could have found plenty of people that wanted to buy it.

I don't think there's even a reason to think about this much. It's not uncommon for pirate crews to encounter DF and especially not for a crew the caliber of the Red Hair Pirates. Most of all the DF users in the OPverse seem to have obtained a DF by accident. So a crew that travels all the seas has a higher rate of encountering DF than other people.

- The Roger Pirates found the section fruit, which was accidentally eaten by Buggy

- The WB pirates had a rule that whoever finds a DF, can do what he wishes with it (though I think it was stated more specifically that he who finds it, eats it but I assume they have a choice)

- BB joined the WB crew for the specific purpose of finding one DF in particular, which he succeeded in

So for adventurous, powerful pirate crews finding DF isn't that unusual and considering they are already plenty powerful, there's no reason for them to immediately eat it. DF are an expensive commodity, around 100m beri on average. Buggy originally had the intention of selling the DF before he swallowed it by accident. So there's really no reason to think there was some scheme behind this all. Lucky Roo even showed a picture of the fruit to Luffy to figure out if he had eaten it, which indicates they found a DF and later on checked which fruit it was (there's a book of DF). In the same chapter Lucky Roo said that they took it from an enemy.

That Roger had eaten the rubber fruit before Luffy has been suggested before, but you can pretty much ignore it. If that truly had been the case, someone should by now have made a remark about it.

Back then they said DF's were rare, which I guess they are compared to the entire OP population, so odds are they were planning on selling it since Shanks got upset Luffy ate it, he didn't want someone he liked who wants to be a pirate to eat a DF. The real question is why despite all the famous pirates we know did Shanks still think a DF was a bad trade off for someone who aspired to be a Pirate.

Because at that point he still saw Luffy as nothing more than a naive child who was talking big. Shanks is very well aware that the life of a pirate is dangerous, so he really did not want to encourage a child too much and now that child lost the ability to swim. It's only when they were about to leave and Luffy made his bold statements that Shanks realized that Luffy was dead serious.

I don't know, Shanks always seemed to take Luffy serious that he'd be a pirate it was at the end when he took his claim of being the next PK serious and gave him the hat. He acted upset Luffy ate the DF because it would be a hindrance to him being a pirate. Also if what most assume is true his crew has no DF's either, which also implies he sees them as not worth the trade off.

One would say that Shanks and crew would sell the GOMU to the highest bidder just for money. They probably don't see in GOMU that importance like GURA that has been known and feard as the power to destroy the world. It would be insane if World Government would treat GURA fruit as threatening as the Ancient Weapons, but who knows? The GURA fruit was a threat to Marines and WG to fall in wrong hands. DF are nothing but something for sale. Only those know their value and importance.
