Toei animation had a press release three weeks ago saying Future Trunks was coming back and a interview with Toriyama where he said that Goku Black is so powerful that Trunks has to travel back in time and the Omni King has to get involved. The Trunks saga starts next week, so we'll get a preview in this week's episode.

Toriyama did say that he had an entire story with them he left untouched. He put a lot of time and effort into Dragon Ball Online giving them material to use.

Dark Goku also has greenyellow earrings like the Makaioshin in your picture.
So they may be of influence to him in some way.
