In the past, Hagoromo granted power to Ashura over Indra, so Ashura ended up being stronger (and Indra was bitter about not being chosen, so the whole cycle of hatred was set in motion). Hashirama and Madara never got to meet Hagoromo, and they don't really fit the archetype too well anyway. But Hagoromo made a point of giving Naruto and Sasuke each some of his power. That is why they ended up being "equal" (though whether or not they are actually equal in strength could be up for debate I guess).

Kurama: Well all that huge Chakra Naruto used for 16 years wasn't even my own, it was just Chakra I gathered for him and when that wasn't enough for him to over power Sasuke in the end I finally let him touch my chakra. That was during the time Sasuke forgot he had a space time Ninjutsu and could swap Naruto into his own BDFRS or just remove his brain from his head since the Sharingan can see things like the blood stream.

Honestly, I don't think Madara ever planned on Killing Hashirama anyway. If you read the manga, he simply said I have beaten you, then Hashirama backstab him. Madara wasn't going for the kill at all. This is why Madara said Hashirama had changed and that there is no hope for the shinobi world.

No it's just to show Madara's loss had nothing to do with power levels but simple misjudgement. They were both out of chakra and resorted to using their weapons.

He didn't lose because of the difference in power levels, they fought until they were both in base mode and nearly out of chakra so their powers were clearly equal.

And based on what you just said Madara intentionally let himself get stabbed so he could carry out his plan without suspicion so it further shows he wasn't inferior.
