Right, but steel is a little under the hardness of bone. So Asuma should be able to accomplish the same feat as masked dude with Hien's added cutting power.

Well yeah, that's the implication of what I said; Hien increases his cutting power, the cutting power being increased is that of steel. IIRC steel is like a 4.5 on Moh's Hardness scale and bone is something like a 5. I knew of this feat but didn't remember where it happened. War Arc is annoying to navigate.

An objection, though, is that blades might split not due to being cut, but due to the impact breaking them. I think it's slightly unclear what happened there.

The blade doesn't augment the element. The element is augmenting the blade.
