Itachi didn't have Mangekyo active, so Jiraiya didn't really have much to worry about during this confrontation (I just mean that it's not like he was in danger of being instantly Tsukuyomi'd). Itachi had also casted Tsukuyomi earlier and so his chakra levels couldn't have been at full. Pretty sure Jiraiya would do fine against generic Sharingan genjutsu.

Kisame would have posed a problem to him, but a fresh Jiraiya versus this Itachi had reason to be confident. Jiraiya's stamina is possibly the highest in P1 (Databook backs this up).

I like this side of It. I guess he really is underestimated. The whole Itachi thing goes up in the air when we realize that Itachi couldn't immobilize him and decided to run for it with Kisame in the end. Kinda goes against his abilities but who knows, maybe he feared messing with Jiraiya's power to some extent.

I wouldn't necessarily use this as evidence considering both Itachi and Kisame succumbed to Part 2 Power Scaling and thus, became much stronger as a result, but regardless, Jiraiya's still very well up there due to the praise he received from both Pain and Obito after his performance against Pain.

Itachi didn't try to immobilize him so where did you get he couldn't from... Jiraya has no counter to tsukoyami or susano would wreck jiraya kow diff we also later find out itachi has yata and totsuka so how the **** can jiraya compete and kisame is a water god... He barely did a descent job against the pains, he ran from the aninal pain alone for 30 minutes of a 2 hour fight in real time and he faced 3 pains at once he got wrecked and when he faced all 6 he was shitted on...

He ran from animal pain half of the fight and then when faced with 3 pains he got wrecked and when faced with all 6 at once it was a low diff L for him how did he do good, when sm naruto was better and wuth intel and with more help and with deva being hurt he still couldn't win and deva pain didnt use ct which wrecks jiraya nor did he use shinra tensei... Wtf jiraya got shitted on with the pains holding back #Oro

But the difference sharingan makes itachi better and then ms even further sm jiraya still loses to ms itachi whether you like it or not and the fact that it taked jiraya running from his opponent for 30 minutes to go into sage mode results in a L to itachi who can go into ms and use amaterasu tsukoyami or susano at will... Jiraya can't even beat kisame who can create an ocean and summon 1000 sharks and super shark bomb jutsu completely obliterates jiraya and his toads

He did well because he devised a tactic that forced him to resort to displaying the Six Paths of Pain. Pain literally trashed a guy who was literally considered to be above Minato and yet it was Jiraiya's clever thinking that forced Pain to use all of the Paths. In the end, Fukasaku knew Minato yet he claimed that only Jiraiya was capable of doing what he did against Pain which signifies that Jiraiya was at least Minato's level who the majority of this base views as very strong.

Naruto also fought never fought against a full powered Pain, but rather a nerfed Pain as Deva Path's abilities were restricted for a large portion of the battle and Pain was merely trying to capture Naruto, not kill him compared to Jiraiya who he did have killer intent. I agree with the idea that Pain was still on another level compared to Jiraiya, but fact remains that he was hyped twice for us to consider that Jiraiya was actually powerful and his performance against Pain was actually commendable.
