Do you think they are well trained? Do you think they aren't well trained? Do they make you feel safe? What is your experience with them?

It's in certain areas that the American police is some shit and abusing their power.

I really haven't seen it where I live. My police seem like their doing their job. But the people are not working with the police to give them information because they are afraid of being called a "snitch" and killed, which actually happened (not very often tho).

Overall my police experience wasn't bad. But during my first year of college my cousin was bring me,him, and his friend back to college from the Mardi Gras break(Louisiana holiday) and a cop stopped him. So the cop wanted to check the car and my cousin didn't know his rights so he said yes. So they found a weed seed my cousin had in the back seat after they threw our stuff everywhere...and to make it worst it was raining out sit and it was night time and cold. So my cousin was arrested.Me and his friend were afraid because at that time we had no license. The cop said "You better drive and not get caught." Shit we were so afraid but we made it back to the campus in an hour. I called my cousin mom and she came get him the next day. Luckily the cops decided to be nice and release him without charging him or something.

frankly ive never had a bad experience with police and ive been caught smoking but i still think american police are trash.

i mean lets face it the police brutality is over the top and its not like its just a recent thing this has obviously been a central part of the institution for years. just look at how they cover it up and dash cam videos go missing and just how easy cops get off.

then theres the fact that cops are essentially just revenue collectors. hiding in their corners to catch someone not wearing a seatbelt to slap them with a ticket. and then again whens the last time a cop even stopped a real crime in action? cool you can respond and maybe get to me in a timely manner after its done but wtf do i need you there for then?

i think sharpstown in texas had a smart idea firing the gang known as police and hiring a private security company to patrol and monitor their streets. its proven more effective than cops who obviously don't have to fear losing their jobs if they break the law. they've reportedly seen a decline in crime and i think it would be nice if another town tried it so we can see its effectiveness

If only budgets and scheduling could allot for more training time... Though I think the system needs a re-work. Sometimes these officers are called to deal with things beyond their expertise. And unfortunatley it can result in bad use of force decisions.

I think the general public in many countries do not understand their police and how they are trained to operate. If your loved one is out of control and armed, and you call the police; expect it to have a high probability of someone getting hurt/shot. If you as their loved one, who knows them better than anyone else, can't get them to calm down and drop their weapon; how do you expect an officer who knows absolutely nothing about your loved one to do? All they usually know is domestic situation where an armed person is trying to hurt people.

But also think about your own job. Think about the people you see working hard, and those who slack off. All jobs have this problem. There are a lot of people who do well, some who do great, and some who suck. I've encountered all 3 in my jobs and in the officers I have met. The ones who do great love to learn. They have a passion for their work and they want to do their best. If their agency doesn't provide the training, they go get it themselves because they feel they need it. The ones who do well understand their job and they care about keeping it so they pay attention to the training provided by their agency. The ones that suck are like the kids in class who don't give a crap and don't take their training serious. It's just a job with a paycheck. Though very few actually exist, there is a fourth group who do everything they can to abuse the system and take advantage of their work. They usually weed themselves out but unfortunately the damage is usually already done.

But it happens to every job. As a civilian, it's important to truly know your rights, yet still be respectful about it and not try to force an officer into a bad spot. Never hold court on the side of the road. You lose every time.

As pro-law enforcement as I am, I still exercise my rights whenever necessary. We have them for a reason. But I won't be a jerk about it or try to humiliate anyone over it. Sometimes it involves making an officer's job more difficult, but he/she should be proffesional enough to recognize your rights.

I'm always for more training in every job. :)

Training probably should be improved, but this would mean allocating more funds to the police department at a time where how politically feasible this is is questionable. Aside from that, I have no generalized stance on American police.

Being in New York and seeing police (and military personnel :|) everywhere in places like Penn Station doesn't make me feel safe, though - but that's just because they're a reminder of what they're protecting against (hint: It's a Post-9/11 USA).

A couple of other things: just because it's on the news, doesn't mean it's true or the whole story. Police brutality and even hate for the police isn't near as rampant as you think. It's actually quite uncommon. Mistakes happen for sure and they are more likely than actual brutality.

Almost all the people screaming about 'police brutality' are not old enough to have experienced the real brutality of the 1960's. Ya'll have it easy compared to back then. I agree with police being held accountable for their actions when they have truly done wrong, but many of the accusations you hear on tv wind up being false. The USA is a litigious society and people sue just because they can.

Canada is nicer in this respect. Officers do on occasion get charged here when it's deserved, and people only sue when it's necessary most of the time. However, Canada has less people.

Idk, I've seen both sides up close and personal. The USA policing system is a lot better than the media portays it. There will always be room for improvement though.

Even with some pretty negative experiences with North America police, I still support them and have no reason to hate them. They serve a necessary function and we all can only do our best to not have too many encounters with them. But without police, lawlessness would abound and you would really regret not having them.

And as for having a private security force? Pass. I've worked security. Zero authority = zero respect. It might work in a small, rich, white town, but they'd get chewed up elsewhere. Even I wouldn't comply with them if they were trying to be the police. And then who do they really answer to? And their minimal training? And the fact that they are purely driven by making money? You think regular police are bad? Privately-funded, under-trained, barely-screened, ill-equipped, security officers would be ineffective in the long run. They have no power to enforce law nor are they trained to do so, and then who investigates when they screw up? Their own company who will try to cover it all up to keep their customers. Again, I've worked for one of the world's largest security firms and I would not feel safe with them replacing police officers.

But whatever. Hate the police if you want, but I dislike the criminals more. Policing is primarily reactive since you can't be everywhere at once, you can't predict what someone is going to do, and you can't be invading peoples' privacy without probable cause or without warrant.

Yeah, you might get stopped or ticketed for minor things, but a good cop uses the minor stuff to find or maybe prevent the bigger stuff. And how often do we typically break the minor laws without getting caught? So complaining when you finally do get caught is pointless. The laws exist for a reason and if you think they are stupid, then lobby to change them. Otherwise, the majority approved them for a reason.

No one likes getting in trouble, but there are consequences in life no matter where you go so get used to it. :/
