believe you are referring to 559 for the saved twice statement. The retcon conclusion will be left last until there are no plausible explanations.
There is a claim of mistranslation of “I’d look lame if you had to save me twice”, but I don’t think it has been established with an analysis, and the mainstream translators (mangapanda, ***********, viz) doesn’t offer something similar, so the claim is unlikely.
So did Hinata save Naruto twice? Well, the word can be translated to “protect” depending on the context (as done by viz), so the saving doesn’t actually have to be successful. The two events refer to the Pein assisted suicide attempt and standing up for shadow clone Naruto not being a disguised zetsu just before the statement. There have been amusing reaching and mental gymnastics that she ‘mentally saved’ [as always, pun intention not confirmed nor denied] him or something like that, riight, as if Hinata is in anyway involved in Naruto’s personal life, or that is comparable to the recent event of saving Hinata from being killed by white zetsus.
So that solves the mystery.
She certainly did not save him during the Pein arc. If anything, she made the situation worse; that explains why SP retconned Hinata’s actions in the anime and movie.
First of all, her action was selfish (hard to put stock against that when Hinata says so herself). She didn’t go so Naruto can be safe and happy, but she abandoned the injured bodyguard beside her for her own peace of mind; hence she was so eager to waste time confessing to him. She rushed in fully expecting to die since it adds in to her peace of mind and narcissistic ego and fantasy. I mean come on, since when is guilt tripping romantic? A person (or a supposed “object”) is not obligated to take responsibility for an obsessed person’s stupid actions.
Naruto asked that no one interferes so they don’t get hurt. Hinata practically jumped at the opportunity to do just that for a selfish non-productive reason. If she wanted to ‘save’ Naruto for his sake, she’ll come up with a plan that is centered around saving him; like gathering competent ninja, or distraction + removing rods. Instead, she wanted to die by Naruto’s side which makes no accomplishment nothing outside of her mind other than traumatize Naruto by making him watch one of his friends (Really, anyone would do, maybe even better: Shikimaru, Kiba, Shino, Gaara; the confession had no impact on the plot) die after Jiraya, Kakashi, and the village were terminated by Pein; she doesn’t get credited for something that got fixed by a third party (Minato-in-seal deus ex machina). The truth is that Hinata wasn’t really the one responsible for the Kyuubi getting out, Pein explicitly wanted to demonstrate a point about Naruto possessing hatred (hence why he went to kill Hinata slowly) and to test the Kyuubi’s power. If Naruto couldn’t resist the rods (like he later did) and do something like gather sage chakra while immobile or get a kyuubi chakra boost, Pein was likely going to attack someone else to get Naruto riled up.
