Question for Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood

In episode 12. There is a flashback of them first meeting their master and become apprentices. Yet both Ed and Al look completely normal and yet are regarded as orphans. When exactly does this take place? Shouldn't Al be in the suit of armor in the flashback since this takes place after their mother's death when they are orphans?

Confused so much here. Anybody clear this up?

Their mom died they wanted to learn alchemy to revive her so they went to their master trained with her and had that exam on the island. After that they resurrected their "mom" and lost their arm/ leg and body

Oh that makes so much sense. I thought they just instantly tried to revive her as soon as she died. Didn't realize there was a time gap. Thanks!
