Could the mere-exposure effect be why people get so drawn to Naruto characters?

"The mere-exposure effect is a psychological phenomenon by which people tend to develop a preference for things merely because they are familiar with them. In social psychology, this effect is sometimes called the familiarity principle."

it's also covered towards the beginning of this video

What I'm getting at is, we spend a lot of time looking at the characters in Naruto because of how long a series it is. Could this be why fans develop a preference for certain characters? Could this be why people are so repulsed by Sasuke's changed design? Suppose you become interested in Itachi after watch an arc he has a lot of screen time in, you go online and look up fanart and his wiki article and just read up about him. This guy slaughtered his entire family and clan and yet to you he's a likable and pleasing character.

People who look like celebrities are considered handsome or attractive, why? Have you ever seen a celebrity and though "I've seen normal people who look better than them, what are people crazy? There's nothing special about these guys" Well the more media coverage you get the more people are looking at you and thus the more people will get used to how you look, and begin to see you as pleasant and familiar to look at, so those people who follow media are going to consider these celebrities as the pinnacle of attractiveness.

How could anyone find the "Moe" characters of a series like Higurashi attractive with their oversized eyes? Well it starts with an anime that has characters which look more human, like Naruto, and then as someone gets into series with more exaggerated "anime features" they begin to see that as normal and attractive, thus you get Otakus railing on real girls calling them "3-D pigs" and stuff. The more you expose yourself to something, the more you're going to prefer that, thus the more you're exposed to your favorite character the more you're going to prefer them.

I disagree. Same thing didn't happen for me with Bleach and One Piece. I think it's that the Naruto characters are genuinely sensitive/vulnerable. However, "They Changed It, Now It Sucks" is a real phenomenon.

Probably. I don't know why but I always tend to like the antiheroes.

Humans are indeed creatures of habit and it explains why people just get used to their favs imperfections.

It probably explains why so many people are complaining about Kishi's assistant's character designs for the Boruto manga.

But it doesn't explain why the fans like Naruto in the first place.

No, it's because fans can deeply sympathize with some characters on a deep level.

Itachi is a fan favorite due to the complex plot surrounding him and having pleasing reasons as to why he did what he did even if it's not justifiable on a basic moral basis (Catch-22 where clan died anyway).

Sasuke is popular with fans because he propelled the plot forward, has an interesting skill set, and nice character design to some. People also like characters who "rebel"- perhaps due to that aspect of escapism since they cannot act out in real life.

Sakura has the most exposure after Sasuke/Naruto, so why isn't she loved by fans?

Why aren't Obito and Madara more popular than Itachi? Because they received more present screen-time in the manga than he ever did.

You mentioned people being dissatisfied with Sasuke's character design. This isn't due to familiarity, it's due to most of his fans solely liking him for his looks (ie: superficial reasons). No offense to any fans who actually liked his story.

You also mention how much otaku love moe characters. Studies have shown that people in general find typical anime characters cute with their big eyes since deep down it brings out a nurturing side in us (remind us of babies). And then at times people feel attracted since the characters are drawn in a sexually appealing way (some men just naturally like girls with bigger "attributes"). It goes more in line with instincts and/or natural preference. However, them taking it to another level and bashing real life girls for looking that way is just due to insecurity- they can't get with a real one so they basically fool themselves into thinking a drawing is perfection.

-in the West. Which is something I remain curious about.

I agree with the post in general though.

Kishimoto complained about her not being as popular as Hinata (who received less screentime than Sakura).

Most fans Sakura has in Japan are just a part of the SasuSaku fandom and use her for self-insert. So, it doesn't work well for her there, either.

Well I guess it could be that NaruHina fans were self-inserting for Hinata, which still supports your argument that it's the ability to sympathize with characters, however superficially that occurs XD

People like Hinata more because she's oversexualized.
