Can someone explain this to me? Why the hell do we have one person or a select few in power? I find it really stupid, when are we going to grow up? When are we going to learn? Do we always need a leader? What have any figurehead done good for society? There has to be a better way of going about running a country than what we see today.

A president is someone who represents the people and speaks for the people. That means their policy align with our views of shaping the country. The president run the country 24/7. People have everyday jobs to do. People do not have time to focus on the country. That is why we elect a president who feels is best to get the job done.

Just think about for a moment. Does anarchy sound good to you. No leadership/ hierarchy / governance means no establishment ( enforcement, security, regulation etc). With even more trickle down effects like eventual societal regression.

Remember these are people we are talking about. Everyone one equal footing is wishful thinking / fantasy. Human beings have proven themselves to be unable to live together without some sort of master authority (with enforcement powers). No human society lives in anarchy - even the smallest and most primitive tribes have some sort of authority structure, which is government by another name. The systems we have today are definitely flawed in some areas but its all we have at the moment.

The real power in the government lies with the congress and the senate you moron. If you paid attention during the government section of your 9th grade social studies class you might not need to ask this question.

Why should I trust that person to run the country? Why should I trust anyone with such an important job? We shouldn't have representatives at all. Just because we've always done something isn't an excuse to keep doing it.

They hold the real power despite how you feel about them.

The system is flawed, yes, but to write them off completely is ignorant IMO. Our country is big and we need leaders to maintain it.

Your job, by voting, is to choose a trustworthy candidate anyway, so I don't see your problem.

democracy
dɪˈmɒkrəsi/Submit
noun
a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives.
"a system of parliamentary democracy"
synonyms: representative government, elective government, constitutional government, popular government;

Majority always rules. Every area elects their own politician/governor to represent the majority there. "If voting made a difference, they wouldn't let us do it." - Mark Twain

Also the problem with democracy is it assumes people are educated enough to make a decision which is far from the truth.
Winston Churchill said "The best argument against democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter"

Let's ask a slightly different question. Do we need any leaders or authority? The answer is currently yes.
However, the real answer assuming you provide everyones needs is no. We don't need anyone in power.
Infact leaders do more harm than good, it doesn't matter what their intention is, power corrupts.

Who whips the leader back in line? You might say the people but most of it is hidden from the public.

Presidents aren't monarchs. They can be impeached if they abuse power.
