Itachi is a caricature in every sense of the word. His entire character is driven by one thing; political indoctrination. There is no oversimplification here, it's just that the man lacks any depth you supposedly attach with him. He was just a poor lapdog who did yet another "cleaner" mission for Konoha and died a disgraceful death. Not unlike any other Leaf's underlings. But, feel free to exhalt him.
