I think Vegeta had a fantastic character development. Look at him in the Boo-saga, when he blows up himself to try to take down Boo and then acknowledges that Goku is better. That's when things have come full circle. Before that, he was an idiot, yes, especially in the Cell-saga.

I cant really say I disliked him but I never took a liking to him like so many have. I disliked when he let Cell powerup to his final form though that was extremely cocky.

He achieved super saiyan in response to his pride and ego not being able to take being surpassed by his son and Goku someone whom he strongly belived should be far weaker than him in strength, talent and skill considering he is low class and he is a prince. He didn't cry once just shows extreme anger and frustration.
