Toriyama said it years ago, back when he wrote the info for the dragon box collections, GT and the movies 1-13 are "side stories that aren't connected to the main story and exist in an alternate universe."

I don't know how you don't know, but Dragon Ball GT is non-canon. He said for the people who keep wishing for it to be canon to consider it to be a what if/side story. So basically it isn't related to the Dragon Ball/Z/Super that we watch.

I did say the dragon boxes. I own the whole collection. Here's a picture of what's written by Toriyama himself referring to GT. It's at the bottom. I'll go a step further and make photobucket account and take a picture of the ones I own where he says the movies take place in an alternative universe, like GT.
