I think the Hyuga were nerfed from displaying their full potential because their abilities were too overpowered and would've taken a lot of the attention away from the Uchiha clan.
Maybe if the author elaborated on certain feats and claims regarding their abilities their power could've been taken to the next level
Just imagine if Hyuuga could create layers/walls of chakra even at medium distance at the place where his/her eyes lock at. I mean it would be great defense and cool use of byakugan taken to new level. Especially if Hyuuga can control it's shape and density, it would be haxx move for elite only ;p.
Based on Neji's claim, anything made of chakra can be undone with taijutsu, that means a Byakugan used to its full potential would have the ability to destroy chakra chains, Susano'o or BM avatars
Of course a Hyuga doesn't have so much potential like elite Senju and elite Uchiha transmigrants but Kishi could've easily put them on par with MS and Sage mode users without any plot holes or retcons which leads to my next observation.
Now, imagine needles or some arrows/spikes shaped of chakra carrying such ability on distance. I mean Hyuuga would shoot it from distance and it would pierce a bit through chakra avatar or Susanoo of enemy.
So much wasted potential...

The Hyuga's ability to control chakra is one of the best in NV and has been stated to be higher than a jonin's level of ability.
To have a higher level of chakra control than a Jonin would mean the Hyuga have the potential to learn jutsu like Rasengan
They would also have the potential to unlock the Byakogou
And technically if one of them had large chakra reserves they could learn to use Sage Mode because it requires balancing chakra with NE which is just another form of chakra control.
Of course it would be used as Susanoo or some chakra avatar like taking on shape of shinobi and increasing his range and strength of attack while at each spot it would be reshaped for some kind of weapon or defence.

When you release the Gates you technically increase the flow of chakra throughout your body, the Hyuga should be able to increase their strength in a similar fashion to Gai and Lee because of their ability to control the tenketsu

5. Insight
Regarding the Sharingan's feats, the Byakugan's superior insight allows Hyuga to easily counter its genjutsu because they can see when it's being used
Their insight also allows them to keep track of high speed opponents similar to Sharingan users, Neji easily kept track of Lee and Naruto powered Kurama's chakra
It could be used as way to strike someone and get him internally wounded by attack from distance. It could have good use in healing and poison matters. The enhanced and great insight would also allow Hyuuga to prepare good strategy and moment to strike. Maybe even nerf some attack by attacking part of body needed to make attack strong enough.
