Besides indra inside of him that made him relevant. he grew up in a era where ninja's were just naturally stronger than the future generations. that's pretty much it. the "Geniuses" of naruto's, itachi, minato, orochi era were basically standard averages to madara. mostly because madara grew up in a era that has been in nothing but wars for decades if not hundreds of years compared to future ninja's who been in peace or wars that lasted just a couple years.
