IMO, he did it to cripple the Leaf. With the village ravaged, the huge casualties, the lack of Jinchuuriki if Kurama just leave and all, he knew Kumo/Iwa would leap on the opportunity to crush the Leaf, leaving Obito with one less obstacle if the other villages get afraid of Kumo/Iwa's power and go to war again.
