NASA has released a spectacular 4K video of the Sun, taken by the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) between January 1, 2015, and January 28, 2016.

SDO takes pictures of the Sun every 12 seconds in 10 different wavelengths. The video shows the Sun in the extreme ultraviolet, which is used to highlight the hottest material on the Sun’s surface (extreme UV corresponds to a temperature of 600,000 Kelvins) and makes it easier to see the Sun’s rotation on its axis.

The Sun had an active year and it’s visible in the SDO images. Flares, eruptions, and prominences periodically disrupt the corona of our star, showing how active and dynamic it really is.

The video is filmed in Ultra-HD (3840 by 2160) and at 29.97 frames per second, with each frame representing two hours. SDO is tasked with monitoring the surface of the Sun, so scientists can understand the effects of the Sun on Earth and near-Earth space. Studying the Sun also helps us understand stars better, being that it's the closest one to us.

Enjoy the magnificence. :)

So north america shrunk after a year? :lol I wonder how big it is now?:lol

NASA have yet to show actual photographs of the earth let alone the sun

Flat-earth theorists/morons aside, isn't the fact that the Earth is not a perfect sphere common knowledge? :|
It is supposed to be but NASA still posts perfect sphere images on their site.

Great work NASA it took you many years despite your 20 billion dollar per year budgets to produce a HD CGI of the sun :|

Thanks for sharing by the way *_*
1. 20 billion dollars a year is not a lot of money to produce and maintain highly-sophisticated and state-of-the-art technology.

2. The budget should be MUCH MUCH higher. The ratio it was getting in 1970 would be acceptable. That is, unless you don't want major scientific breakthroughs and manned missions to celestial bodies again.

Idk if that is towards me but either way, I don't think Earth is flat. I don't know if it is common knowledge about the Earth not being a perfect sphere since like what Gerkak said, the planet is always displayed as a sphere lol

What a hoax video, new it the moment i saw the sun color, the sun isn't fúcking yellow,it's white and doesn't look like that. How is this an ultra hd footage of the sun or did you mean an ultra hd cgi.

Yes it isn't much but I would think that NASA would at least give us real image instead of CGI I mean surely after all these years NASA has accumulated enough money to show the public real photographs of our sun instead of artist impressions.

2. Yes it should be but the world has other concerns and given NASA's way of doing things I doubt people would be willing to trust them with anymore money. I do want scientific breakthroughs to come up, knowledge is always good

It was not directed to you lol. Well it isn't a perfect sphere, but it's definitely roundish, heaps of go-pro videos from the "edge" clearly show that.

The sun is yellow based on how hot the sun is and its size. Our sun is a Main Sequence star, aka a "young adult". If the sun was recorded to be a higher temperature, we would expect the sun to be White or Blue in color, in that order. Colder suns are Orange and Red, in that order, meaning Betelgeuse is colder than the sun despite its large size.
