How come this is the case for majority of ppl? Our lives are filled with luxuries and opportunities our ancestors could only dream about.
In the developed world, most of us have abundant food and water, live longer and healthier lives than ever before, have shelter to protect us from the elements, and have considerable control over the direction of our lives? Hmm.

We're taking for granted all of those basic needs, which once occupied so much of people’s minds. Yet the expected result – contentment – has often failed to come about.

Where did all this discontent come from? How can we remove it? If we examine our mind when it is discontented, we find that it is filled with thoughts of what we lack and what we need. Although such thoughts might be justified if we are worried about starvation or shelter for the winter, they are hardly justified for most of our daily concerns. More likely, we are discontented because our car is 5 years old, our clothes are longer fashionable, or we have no date for Saturday night. If we attach so much importance to these minor details, it is no wonder that we are not content.

To find peace and contentment, we must learn to cultivate gratitude and to appreciate what we have. Instead of thinking about what we lack, we must learn to focus on the positives in life. Of particular importance, we must stop comparing ourselves to others and becoming jealous of what we perceive them to have. Why does it matter what our neighbour has? What about all those people less fortunate than ourselves? Our thoughts dictate our feelings. If our thoughts are about what we lack, discontentment follows. The practice of gratitude is a powerful tool to keep us focused on what is right with our lives.

Therefore, whenever we feel discontent, we must try to regain our perspective. We must remember what is truly important in life. Discontentment results from our tendency to blow something out of proportion – to think that a new car, a better house, or even a small salary raise will make all the difference in our lives. If we are dissatisfied with our lot, we may be tempted to try and improve it. However, no improvement in our circumstances will make us any better off unless we also learn to appreciate what we already have.

So in summary appreciate what you have and don't worry about what somebody else has for those you you who want a tl;dr.

And TC, to answer the neighbor part. It's called competition. It's something human beongs gave ALWAYS dobe. Heck even animals in their kingdom worry about what another has and they try to usurp it. There are people less fortunate and we should be greatful but those who are fortunate are not them. Competition though is meant to be healthy it's meant to inspire people to become better. However the real problem is that people have become obssessed with it and tale in more than they need. There's a HUGE difference between someone that has self-interest and someone who is selfish. Depending on the economy the world is extremely complex from a finacial and social perspective. So much so, our amcestors did not exploit this because they did not habe ACCESS to a vast majority of resource we have today. Heck nobody wants to wear the same thing constantly, you sounded like one of those people that like to tell people how to spend their money making ypur post a bit hypocritical. How you say why worry about what my neighbor has yet call people out for wanting simple things. Look at it this way, nobody wants to live like those less fortunate out of a subconscious fear of becoming like that they desire more income, more consumption. Which technically is good for business, businesses tmthrive because people act like this if people didn't. Car industries would be making less profit, fashion industries would be making less profit, many thibgs would. That would put more people out of work. There's nothing wrong with people wanting anything you want. It's the over consumption of this. One or two people acting this way won't make a huge shock. But everyone? I think not. Appreciate what you have, send your money wisely, be happy.

Because most of us are disconnected. Most of us are part of the cancerous hive mind.

Always wanting more is just a part of human nature, and it's not a bad thing. It helps our species advance even further.

Its human nature to be greedy, and also the basis of capitalism. In an Orwellian reality, the haves and have nots of this world continue to exist and, sadly will always exist as its a part of nature. All we can do is create an environment in which individuals have opportunities to get ahead and leave the rest to people.

People tend to look at what others have and what they don't have, rather than being grateful for what they have and what others don't have.

There's nothing wrong with wanting more, I'm not happy with what I have but that doesn't mean I'm not grateful. I can be greedy and want more while still acknowledging what I have, we should never settle for less and think to ourselves "that's good enough, I'm happy for what I have". Being ambitious is the best.

Yeah that's true. I hate the "the grass is always greener on the other side" mentality.

Actually I think we're discontent because the world doesn't have what we need, like Imagine an immortal god who keeps watching movies to quench his thirst- he doesn't even know water exist and that he needs it, us humans are just in a bad situation(most of us).

What a person can have and achieve can be the driving force that can make a person go through hardships and misery to achieve the desired goals but the reason for been discontented is it's in human nature to not get enough of what they achieve, i think that's where the people get lost and succumb in to the greed and even be jealous of the ones that achieve more than them .

only finding some where in the middle of it will make a person acheive what they desires and be content with what they acheive .
