Over a billion in less than two weeks. Impressive.

Cameron may have to pass the torch.

Nah. Inflation is a beautiful thing, lots of people were seeing Titanic 9 times in cinemas. It's timeless.

Avatar & Force Awakens though? More gimmicky and don't stand up as films in their own right.

Seeing how strong it's going, definitely. 1.1 billion so far.

Not to mention it hasn't even opened in China yet.

Furious 7 did it quicker than Avatar, still run out of puff soon after and ended up no way near.

Did you just compared something as big as Star Wars to the Fast and Furious?

Perhaps, though Avatar 2 is probably going to kill Episodes 7 and 8 when it comes out in another 2 years.

Did you just compare something with selected audience of sci-fi lovers to a film that has a universally broad target audience? Revenge of the Sith didn't even make one, so it's not exactly with universal appeal.

Avatar only did good because it was almost entirely CGI and 3D was new at the time. The visuals is what made people watch, the movie itself is not even good.

And Episode 7 wasn't as good as any of the sequels, yet it will continue to make more in the box office. The only reason it's so close is because of the rise of ticket prices over the 6 years between Avatar coming out and Episode 7 coming out. I remember paying around $6.50-$7.50 back then for a ticket and now I'd be lucky to find any theaters under $9. My point is people buy into hype, which was what both Avatar and the new Star Wars were. I never said anything about either film being quality, because neither of them are.

Ticket price part is true. The rest is just an opinion so i'm not gonna touch on that.

As long as soft reboots keep capitalising on nostalgia and established franchises then this is going to keep happening. 3 ridiculous scale films at the box office in one year in a row, all trumping each other.

It's not so much opinion and just proof that 'safe' movies now more than ever with little to no originality to them are going to get hugely rewarded for duplicating the past and being standard crowd-pleasers.

The cracks will begin to show in 10-20 years when the next generation don't have anything to adapt or reboot. That said though, I have a huge crush on my mary sue princess Rey. What was new in the new Star Wars carried the film, just wish there were more of it.

People buying into hype part is pretty true as well. Me saying it wasn't as good as the sequels is purely opinion, so you got me there for sure, though I'm sure a large part of the Star War audience would agree with me, it is still just an opinion. Tickets went up between $2.50 and $3.50 over the past 6 years, which is probably the highest amount they have ever risen in such a short span of only 6 years. I'm not trying to shit on Episode 7, but a lot of it has to do with ticket prices rising close to 50% of what they were when Avatar was out. The reason why I first said Avatar 2 will beat both is because they will be on a leveled playing field in terms of ticket price being even in 2017 instead of every 2 tickets sold for Episode 7 equaling every 3 tickets sold for the first Avatar. Gradually, it starts to make a difference as we are seeing now.

You're underestimating the series. The first Star Wars is the third highest grossing film with inflation.

The prequels sucked. This is expanding the Star Wars universe with the cast of the original trilogy returning. Star Wars has picked up legions of fans for the past 30+ years. There is far more hype for this than FF.

Went from 15th place to 8th highest grossing film in less than a week.

I hope so. Not because I find the new Star Wars that good nor deserving of that position, but I simply don't like Avatar and I rather have Star Wars taking it than Avatar.

I never liked Avatar and never understood why it became so popular. To me it felt like it got hyped en mass by hardcore treehuggers, vegetarians and romantics. I mean it was essentially space Pocahontas ~_~
