Fresh rains in the southern Indian city of Chennai (Madras) have caused serious flooding, with flights and trains suspended and hundreds of people without power.

The army has been deployed to rescue thousands of stranded people after two days of heavy rain.

At least 188 people are now known to have died in floods in Tamil Nadu state since last month.

A depression in the Bay of Bengal has triggered rains in coastal areas.

Last month, non-stop rain for nearly a week brought the city to a standstill.

Two days of fresh rains have again led to massive flooding, so much so that flights from the city's airport have been indefinitely suspended after flood waters entered the runway and tarmac areas on Tuesday evening.

Reports say some 400 passengers are stranded at the airport, and all flights have been cancelled.

More than a dozen trains have also been cancelled after flood waters inundated the tracks.

The army and the National Disaster Response Force have been deployed in the city's worst-affected southern suburbs to rescue people stranded in their flooded properties.

At least 10,000 policemen and swimmers have also been employed in the rescue effort, Chennai police chief JK Tripathy told the AFP news agency.

"The police want to help but there are no boats. We are trying not to panic," Ramana Goda, who took refuge at a police station, told Reuters.

Reports say that power supply has been suspended in nearly 60% of the city's neighbourhoods.

Most of the main streets are waterlogged and schools were closed for the 17th day since November, reports say. Schools and colleges have been shut in six districts due to the rains.

Patients have been evacuated from a government hospital in the Tambaram area after flood waters entered the building.

Residents have taken to social media to offer accommodation, food and mobile phone recharges to citizens who are being forced to evacuate their properties.

"We only saw rains like this some 25-30 years ago when there was no electricity for almost a week. It has been raining since Monday night and there has been no respite. Everywhere you look, there is two to three feet of water,'' Ashok Modi, a resident of Sowcarpet area told BBC Hindi's Imran Qureshi.

All the reservoirs around Chennai are full and the rivers are flooded with the excess waters released from the reservoirs, says the BBC Tamil's Muralitharan in Chennai.

Thousands of people who were living on the banks of these rivers have been moved to temporary shelters.

The meteorological office says "scattered to heavy" rains are expected to continue for the next three days.

India suffers severe flooding every year during the annual monsoon rains from June to September. The retreating monsoon has been particularly vigorous over south India and more so in Tamil Nadu, our correspondent says.

The average rain of yesterday equaled the average rain of the whole month. So the entire month's amount of rain fell in just one day... Not once, but twice..

More info about the rain can be found here ->

I live in Chennai too, but thank god that I live in a high lying area O_O

Well looks like Paris conference on climate is going to give positive steps to make climate better. Also hopping Tamil Nadu recovers from it quickly after rain stop and govt. become more and more cautious about this sudden changes.

Apparently there will be moderate to heavy rain in many areas in the next 4 days. Hate it that I can't use my phone for internet z.z... Communication lines are dead.

Sad. But seriously. People are that worried about their phones? Pathetic that the world has come to such technological needs.

Worried? Wouldn't you worry about your relatives or friends living in such flood lying areas and not be able to call them at all since the communication lines are cut? Can you even know if they are safe or not? Or they are washed up in the flood? Communication plays an important role here.

I thought you were inactive? But honestly, if someone took away every cell phone in the world and nobody had one or could get one, there would be mass destruction everywhere because us humans are so addicted to technology. It's simple. I personally have no feelings toward anybody in my family or friends, I hate people and personally wouldn't care very much at all if there was a flood and I lost connection to people. It's just water, learn to swim.

Well, I come online every now and then....

You can't swim properly against powerful currents in some flood affected places.... Well if someone took away other people's cellphones, he/she just bought death onto himself/herself. Simple as that U_U...

Oh and not everyone is care-free as you...

Yea. The person probably didn't realize the importance of communication or the size of the problems. Today's newspaper here said floods in Chennai broke 137 year record. It's a massive loss on all account- people dead/stranded or in water, damaged property and many companies had to close offices.. just keeps piling up.

The damage accounts for over 20,000 crore rupees and counting. Getting into Chennai via the southern part is almost impossible due to heavy traffic and what not.. The water was neck-deep in many places and some places even got flooded till the first floor of the apartment..

Literally millions are affected by this unexpected catastrophe.

Yep, Situation is bad over there, but with people helping each other and Army getting involved too, its been a relief for the ones who were stranded in the flooded areas, I myself came back from the place two days back, was stuck in my hostel, The only problem we faced was short supply of food.
Well with airport and train station closed it only made it worse, About 700 peeps were stuck in the airport for a few days, idk how those guys managed. As far as i heard now airport is functional so i guess that is a relief. Tho the rains predicted gives me a bad vibe..
Well, all i can do is pray for the people over there. Things never got 'this' bad :/
