So I was think, what would make some cool additions to the specialized elements.

Specialized as in:

Lighting and Combustion Bending for Fire

Metal and Lava Bending for Earth

Blood and Spirit Bending for Water

True Flight for Air

Air has the least going for it, but I think it and the others have more avenues that can be added. Any ideas?

I was thinking Adamant/Diamond for Earth, Storm/Weather for Air, and Plant (like Moukuton) for Water. These would be Avatar exclusive bending arts. Since they can mix and match different elements for the effect. Similar to Naruto, but not to the same degree.

Then this is not genuine bending anymore, then the avatar is simply using different bending arts in short sequence. Narutowise that would be the same as using an earth jutsu and then a fire jutsu to make some pseudo lava, not using the lava element. In reality it's something two different benders could accomplish, something that even has occurred a few times in the series. They once used a cloud camouflage with air- and waterbending.

Not to mention some of the things you said can be done by regular benders. In the old catacombs of Ba Sing Se the Dai Li was bending crystal. It's very well possible that regular earth benders can bend diamond, but the truth is what would be the point of that? They can only bend, not create, so they would have to be fighting in a diamond mine and you don't find those very frequently and even if that was the case, diamonds are really not big. So it's essentially useless.

There was also a swampbender who could bend vines, which is in fact plant bending. However that was only possible because of the large amount of water in the vines and the flexibility of the latter. He was bending the water, not the vines itself. Trees are much more resilient and have way less free water in them. It's the same principle as with metalbending which is based on bending the impurities in the metal. The more impurities, the easier it becomes to bend it, but the less quality the metal has. The higher the quality, the less easier it becomes to bend it due to the lack of impurities. It's the same with trees. Vines are still doable, but trees are far more difficult.

You're thinking way too much in Naruto terms about the concept of elements, while it's quite different for TLA.

Anyhow I've always expected for airbenders to be able to create near perfect vacuums. Some techs even started to approach like how Zaheer sucked the air out of people to choke them, but in the end it never really came to be.

Think about other specialized bending arts though.

Specifically Lava bending for Earth and Ice Bending for Water. How are either possible, without using another element to achieve the effect?

Water freezes at 0 degrees Celsius/32 degrees Fahrenheit. How can water benders independent of the ability to lower air temperature, decrease water to the point of freezing? With that logic, they should also be able to increase the temperature of water and create boiling water; independent of having fire to increase the heat.

Same goes for lava bending. Rocks melt at 1300 degrees Celsius/2400 degrees Fahrenheit. And yet Bolin, Ghazan and Kyoshi managed to do it, without an active lava source. Roku bent lava while in a volcano, when he possessed Aang. How is lava bending possible without using fire to heat the rocks?

Aang having airbending+ that allows him to manipulate the weather, makes more sense than the above instances that are already canon to the show.

With Adamant/Diamond, I was spit balling how an Earth bender could make their rocks stronger. Since it's a mineral substance.

I'm not married to plant bending, just wanted something less gruesome than blood bending.

The reason why for instance water freezes at low temperatures, is because the lower the temperature, the slower atoms and molecules will move. On the other hand the higher the temperatures, the faster they will move. This is how solids transform into liquids and then gasses and vice versa. They don't need to control the temperature if they can simply make the molecules move slower/faster directly.

I think the first thing what Ghazan did was spinning around the pieces of earth before it became lava and also earth automatically generates heats and melts under pressure. That's how lava is created in the first place in real life. Not because something else is heating up the earth, but because the earth is heating itself up.

And by default you need to leave avatars out of the equation considering they can bend all elements. Also there is no such thing as ice bending. That's waterbending, not a single time has it even referred as a different form of bending. All waterbenders can make water transform into ice. That's what I mean with that you're too focused on the elemental concept of Naruto where they continuously have to combine different elements to create a new one.

I called it ice bending to illustrate what was happening. Ice is solid water, and lava is liquid earth. These are changes in the state of matter. No one bats an eyelash at Katara and other waterbenders turning water into a solid, but it should raise more eyebrows when Bolin and Khazan seemingly turn solid rock into liquid magma.

Keep in mind that magma/lava can only exist in subterranean places on Earth, where the temperature is much higher, and hot enough to melt rock. The volcanoes on land and on the ocean floor all have direct channels from the lower regions of the Earth. Ghazan spinning rocks before he created lava still doesn't explain how he was able to create the thousands of degrees temperature change in order to facilitate the change. Or all the times he and Bolin seemingly stomped on the ground and their was lava there.

The rules are seemingly bent when it comes to lava bending, and by extension water becoming ice. Changes from one for of matter to another, literally take no energy or second element to do.

It's not just Naruto's handling of elements I'm thinking about. It's also comic books. Look at the character's Wind Dragon from DC and Storm from Marvel and compare their wind abilities to Aang's and other airbenders.

Theoretically, Aang and other airbenders should be able to alter the weather with air. Not so much Storm levels, since she can make it rain and lighting, but definitely Wind Dragon.
