The EU wasn't by any means perfect, but to completely erase it as canon.....

Totally agree. Although there were some bad ideas in the EU, there were also some great ones. If they really had to change the canon then at least they could have brought some of those ideas back in the new era. Or just change what happened after Episode VI.
