Well the Sith don't strictly HAVE to be evil or fuel themselves with hate & anger--it's just that lust for power can steer someone off course & anger is easy to consume. The Sith could easily fuel their power with love, joy hope and any other passion--hate is just easy. But the Jedi in reality sucked. Every time they got knocked on their rear they had it coming, they were terrible at their job & they sucked at getting rid of the Sith & finish cleaning up the mess. If they had gotten it right the first time the Sith never even would have turned into an empire thousands of years before Episode I started. BUT the Jedi weren't nearly as smart or thorough as they thought.
