Do I need to play the previous games to be able to understand this one or can I jump right into it?

For those of you who have it, do you like it?

If you want to play it for the lulz then sure you can start with 4

I personally dislike it. It runs on the Skyrim engine and that is really outdated.

The game was produced by bethesda.
But bethesda used the same engine they used for skyrim fkr the graphic.

That was all cool for the PS3 but it's not something that should be used for the new Generation since it is out-dated.

No, you don't need to be familiar with the series to play this one just fine.

Yes, I do play it, and I enjoy it quite a lot, although as a fan of Fallout since '97 I dislike a few certain things, but you won't notice them if you didn't play the previous games.

Makes sense... So outdated that they couldn't put the game on ps3 or xbox 360.

Is there even references that I won't understand or is it completely good to dive in?

I'm playing Fallout4 right now, go buy it, you'll have a blast. You don't need Fallout3, New Vegas, or the classic games to understand the plot or setting.

The engine doesn't have much influence over graphical capacity considering the engines can still provide upgraded meshes, aniostropic filtering, and depth of field. See, Skyrim didn't have two of those I listed. Skyrim didn't have Godrays. But hey, it's on the same engine so it must be the same!

They'd explain to you or immerse you in Lore while you play. Yeah, if you've played the previous games, you'd understand some of the Lore immediately, but your appreciation of the game wouldn't falter from not experiencing it before.

There are a few references, but they are not crucial to understand and to grasp everything this game provides - they are more like some easter eggs and tributes for the old fans. Should you like Fallout 4, though, it will most likely inspire you to play the previous games, and personally I strongly advise you to play Fallout: New Vegas in this case. I believe it's the best Fallout game for those who never played the original one and Fallout 2 (since p.1 and 2 are really hard to dive into nowadays considering their age and graphics, though I loved and still love Fallout 2 the most.)

Overrated game.
Although, my opinion may not matter.
But if you have money left and alot of time(you really need alot of time if you want to explore much and experience what the game brought you.) sure then why not buy it?

Eh, I'm low on both of those things. Thanks for reminding me, lol.

This is the first one I liked out of the franchise. It's better if you play this one.

it's not so much a sequel as it is more of a parallel. Essentially the same plot and similar enough setting and factions. I've only played new vegas aside from 4 and as far as i can tell it's pretty much the same game with new features and main story.

You might wanna get the PC version though. People bag on the graphics and that it's on Skyrim's engine, but really that's actually good news. They are STILL making mods for skyrim and already started with Fallout 4. Only a matter of weeks before they release massive graphic boost mods and patches.
