Sorry for the silly-sounding title...

But anyway, what I want to know is what criteria is most important in determining what characters become your favorite?
Not just in Naruto, but of any and all fiction.
For example:
- How similar you are to that character, personality-wise
- How similar you are to that character, appearance-wise
- How much you want to be like that character, personality-wise
- How much you want to be like that character, appearance-wise
- What powers/abilities that character has (if that character's in a world that has powers)
- How attracted you are to that character (for you weirdos/freaks)
Etc

Mine would have to be how much I want to be like that character. Kakashi is my #1 fav fictional character ever, but I'm nothing like him. My past is nowhere near as tragic and I'm not as intelligent and cool-headed as he is. I'd like to be a smooth genius like him though.

In Naruto: Kakashi, because he is usually calm and laid back like myself. His fighting style is good. Itachi, nice fighting style. Pain has the god complex, the best theme in the series not to mention an overall badass

In DBZ: Goku and piccolo. Goku because he does the right thing and is humble, he isn't concerned with material possessions. Piccolo because he is badass and though tough on the outside he is good on the inside.

HxH: Killua, because he was able to overcome his struggle between being a cold blooded killer to a friend others can depend on.

There are others but I'll just leave the above 3.

Title is just fine.

To me is how relatable that character is. If 'x' character have a lot of common things with me then I'm going to like 'x' character a lot.

For example:
- How similar you are to that character, personality-wise
I'll take my favorite character of all time to answer all these questions. Rena Ryuugu from Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (Anime/Manga/VN)

Personality wise, we're really alike. We're both sweet and have a friendly nature within us,

Our personality can change dramatically depending on the type of people that we're dealing with.

- How similar you are to that character, appearance-wise
I like the way that I look and I like the way she looks.

- How much you want to be like that character, personality-wise
I really want to become like rena in some traits that she has that I don't currently have or I have lost through the time and that is trusting people. She really can become friends with anybody that easily, on the other hand, I have somewhat trouble making friends.

- What powers/abilities that character has (if that character's in a world that has powers)
Rena doesn't have any natural powers. It doesn't mean that she's weak. She's pretty skilled to be a human. I seriously want to become like her in the future after some training in CQC.

I'm not really attracted to that character sexually, just that I appreciate her. The way she handled all the things that happened in higurashi. All the things that she had so suffer. It makes me happy that she was able to overcome higurashi's craziness. Rena is by far the most badass and relatable character ever.

Because my favorite (Might Gai) don´t need free/stolen power or asspull directly from Hagoromo to be OP.

He is strong thanks only to hard training and strong power of will.

I kind of a have a certain type when it comes to picking favorite characters. They can be good, bad, or morally ambiguous, but their personalities have similar traits: they have good self-control, are often polite and dutiful, focusing on their task/goal, they are loyal to someone/something or just stay true to themselves no matter what, have strong determination when it comes to reaching their goals. They range from those who can put their emotions aside completely and become human weapons to those who just keep the same cool attitude for most of the time; their flaws usually include pride and arrogance, over-confidence in their abilities.

I also value good self-control and manners in reality, I am usually like that myself too. As for attraction, I have a bit of hair obsession so I tend to pick favorite characters with hairstyles I like. For powers, I like characters that don't have many, but are experts at what they can do - and again, I value and respect that in real life as well.

Wow. I never really put much thought into the huge dilemma Killua had to face. Not to mention he's only a kid. Plus, his techniques revolve around lightning, my favorite element. Thanks for giving me more admiration of his character. The other characters you mentioned are cool, too.

Wow. Great reply. Wish I had that much admiration for my fav. Seems like that Rena character legitimately affected your life positively. Reading of your connection to her further reinforces my claim that fiction is the best thing in this world, even more so than love, food, ***, and money. Hope you appreciate the creator of that anime as much as you do Rena.
Somehow, people seem to forget that the movies, TV shows, comics, novels, anime, manga, video games, etc that they love all have/had creative minds behind them. Fiction isn't just born from nothingness. It's born from people. So let's remember to express our gratitude towards them.

Haha yeah, man. Guy (my preference for spelling his name) is freakin' awesome and so worthy of respect. To me, he's damn near the epitome of a man. I would say that his goofy nature is a flaw, but that's just his way of being enthusiastic, which is another admirable trait of his.

Awesome reasons, man. You like very respectable characters. Similar to real people, no one's perfect.
Love to read or hear of anime positively impacting people's personalities. Far too many people end up becoming bitter, overly odd and anti-social, and just plain ol' scum from indulging in anime and manga.
And @bold, seems like one of your favorite Naruto characters is Guy, too.

Thank you. Rena has affected my life positively. It just what happened to her made me cry, which is a good thing. I suggest you to watch it so you can see it yourself.

You do have a point. I really dislike those people that say that cartoon or anime is a waste of time. There are characters that makes you think about life. There are characters that we can relate to, characters that we can dislike/hate. It's actually what makes our life have a meaning.

Hope you appreciate the creator of that anime as much as you do Rena.
Yeah I appreciate the creator of higurashi a lot. When the blu rays of higurashi comes out I'll buy them so I can support him. I'm also buying the visual novels that are coming out in steam to deeply show how much I really thank the creator of higurashi.

Exactly! Characters aren't born from nothingness. People put feelings into those characters. Creators put traits of real humans being to them so we can either relate with them or hate/dislike them.

At the end of the day, they're fiction, yes, but they have a big impact within us the readers. +1

Actually, I can talk a lot about how certain characters influenced me positively as well. In fact, some of them helped me fight depression. You can read , for example (I am totally not obsessed or anything; some of these are cheesy on purpose, though my feelings are true). And no, Guy isn't among my faves, although I appreciate him.

{Kabuto;}Self-Identity Crisis, thought he could turn himself into a God, a scheming trickster, turned medical ninjutsu into a fighting style, cheats in battles and plays with people's phobias not to mention a fun shit-talker in battle. The perfect spy. Tragic, human backstory. Isn't afraid and actually HAS FUN taking on people way above his level, perfected possibly the best Ninjutsu in the NV, became a Dragon Sage through skill, surpassed Orochimaru, interesting fighting style.

The other favourites are also tricksters but of other natures. The 'TRICKSTER' is by far my favourite fictional archetype because they're usually such tortured, pathetic and scheming characters. They can range from lying hero to pathetic tragic villain. They don't follow rules and almost always are self-aware of their own actions and assess themselves critically.

That's why I can relate to them. They have their own agenda and aren't afraid of being the underdog, even if they don't get any heroism or credit for it. The guy who can win with a couple sly words than force. That's who I want to be.

I get "weak in my knees" for characters who share a view of mine, or who have stories that are alike my own. Obito Uchiha is a good example of both of these. (Slightly different living experience, but I can understand his "loneliness" and despair.) Another example would be Kaneki Ken from Tokyo Ghoul, considering the fact that I do know the feeling of "being thrown into something you had no interest in".
