No AIDS only destroys your immune system and then leaves you to die from any number of things. I think the most common is pneumonia :|

You don't actually die from AIDS.

You die from a disease you get while having AIDS (cold, fever, etc.)
Your Inmune System is unable to fight that desease and thats why you die.

While this is true, this is kinda a "smart ish" answer.

Pneumonia is highly survivable by anyone under 55. It's more of an irritation nowadays. However, if you have AIDS it can be life-threatening.

Ergo, AIDS really causes death even if it really doesn't. With AIDS, even the cold can kill you.

Also, Itachi had to carry the weight of killing his entire clan, being exiled from his own village, and was a traitor in the Akatsuki. This would likely cause huge amounts of stress on anyone, as noted in Itachi basically committing suicide against Sasuke. Depression and stress greatly increase your risk of getting a lethal illness.

Combine the stresses of the MS with depression and stress, and he likely developed cancer.

My thoughts exactly : Cancer due to the stress of killing his clan and family

He had a very weak immune system and probably couldn't fight his fever. Aids can't kill a person but TB can so he possibly had that disease. Also his mental stress accumulated in him for all the atrocious deeds he was forced to do and died from that.

Him having Aids was meant to troll Itachi and his stregth/greatness in the manga.
