1- Sasuke: The main catalyst and the central core element of every single plot line. Take him out and there is nothing to Naruto.
2- Obito: He created the Akatsuki, was behind the Nine-Tails attack that led to the massacre.
3- Danzo: He connects Konoha and Pein arc and Orochimaru's arc nicely.
4- Itachi: He makes up for the missing pieces in the puzzle.
5- Nagato: He was pivotal to the threads that connect Danzo, Obito, Konoha and Sasuke together.
6- Madara: He founded Konoha with Hashirama. It's through him that you learn the history and that ends up connecting nicely with Sasuke's Clan.
7- Naruto: Despite being a main character, he is never a catalyst and the above-mentioned have moved the plot for him. He's just a superficial character.

Honorable mentions:

8- Orochimaru: He connects sand, Danzo and Uchiha arc nicely.
9- Tobirama: Though, he's unheard of for the most part of the plot, his plotline reconnects with Sasuke in the war arc.


The rest are literally irrelevant, to be honest. Kakashi adds little or nothing to the plot other than being a teacher. His past develops Obito more than him. In fact, it only developed Tobi more. Anyone in their right mind knew Tobi was Obito. It was too obvious.

Obito is the main reason why Naruto and Sasuke and countless other people's lives were so messed and if Naruto had a Main Villain then he'd be it.

Itachi is the reason why there's a character named Sasuke, without Itachi there would be no Sasuke or his character would be completely different.

With Danzo so much stuff could have been avoided Uchiha Massacre, Akatsuki, Kabuto going dark, Pain invasion and the Nine tails attack.

Without Iruka, Naruto's character would have become completely different.

Madara was the one who was pulling the strings and without him no Obito and no Obito pretty much means no story.

Without Minato literally there would be no Naruto.​

1. sasuke-i mean nearly the whole series is about bringing him back with the mc chasing him all over. always moves the plot forward plus concluded the series with his speech, nuff said.
2.obito- involved in kyuubi incident and uchiha massacre that made naruto and sasuke orphans which are huge plot points in the story. formed the main villain group underground and started the 4th war that brought shinobis together.
3.itach-involved heavily in the development of sasuke, killed off the uchiha
4. madara
5. jiriaya
6. Danzo
7. Orochimaru/kabuto

People here I think talked about characters and plots development of manga and not Naruto verse base story and history.

Its like people gave credit of relevancy to the countries that can produce Nuclear missile but not the person that invent nuclear power or weapon.

These are just a few from the top of my head, though when it comes to the characters that are the top three (No order again):

I say Obito because he was connected to both plot points of the MC's; Uchiha Massacare, and the Kyuubi attack.

Not only that he was the one who acted as Madara and started the Shinobi war, and who controlled the Akatsuki. I would mention BZ/Kaguya but I hate those characters so much that I don't want the readers to throw up as well :lol

Whichever final villain that shows up and says they masterminded the entire story (3 villains do it, it's not cool or unique) you're forgetting 7 years+ of manga that clearly had Obito at the beginning, middle and end of the story.
