Would Rock Lee have been a better protagonist than Naruto?

He's more relatable, he doesn't have some magic fox that saves his ass whenever he's in a bad situation, he has the biggest obstacle to overcome considering he can't use genjutsu or ninjutsu, his fights would have been more interesting than seeing Naruto just blow up everything with a huge ass rasengan. If Rock Lee was the main character he probably would have learned something cool like mastering druken fist without having to be drunk, learning how to improve the primary lotus, using a one inch punch that punches people through mountains, hardening the chakra around his body so he can take more hits or make his punches/ kicks stronger. This is just my opinion on the matter, i thought Naruto was a good protagonist until this reincarnation bullstuff appeared. And the more i think about it the more he would have been OP because of the fox alone. Too bad kishi trollo shoved this character under the rug along with Neji during shippudden gotta love it.

Discuss.

P.S Plus, he has the best theme in the series.

I think Naruto is fine as the main protagonist. Rock Lee should have been developed as much as Naruto and Sasuke though.

I think Rock Lee as a main character would have been too cliché. But i do agree that he should have been as important as Gai/Kakashi at the end.

no he was a gag character, Naruto was easier to take seriously and Naruto was often a very dark and serious manga.

Naruto was only dark in midnights. Otherwise it was always sunny in that show. Btw what did you eat for dinner in jail?

Certainly there are a lot of characters that can carry a show on their own.

Rock Lee, Kakashi, Jiraiya etc.

But I did pick up Naruto to read the story of a boy with demon fox.

Relatability is subjective for obvious reason's and characters don't need to be relatable, they need to be compelling. Reliability can be a part of that, but it's not the only factor. I personally don't find the Naruto character all that interesting, but I find Rock Lee even less so. It's true, he had one of the best fights in the whole series, but as far as characterization goes, he pretty much has a gag for a personality, and that's not cutting it.

Nope. His fighting style is boring /hes not versatile. He doesnt have good background unlike Naruto.

Rock Lee is a great character no doubt, but how the story goes through the series he would eventually be put into the same situation of ass pull power ups and destiny non sense.

So pick and choose.

Funny, because Kishi admitted out of all the characters, he was suprised Rock Lee grew in popularity. Intentionally Rock Lee was a gag character, but should have been given better spotlight. Through and through, when I see threads like this, I'm reminded people just automatically skip and forget the theme of Naruto, which is about redemption and forgiveness. Naruto was the main character because he conveyed the message Kishi wanted to give. Rock Lee was nice, but him being an underdog with little to no backstory past to build of off was as deep as it goes, and there are plenty other underdogs like that to pass around.
