*Pain* was better written character than Madara

Although I love Pain/Nagato's abilities, godly music theme, etc. it was his philosophy (and scenes like this) that made me enjoy his character so much. He was the first character to truly breakdown and challenge the main hero's goals as well as make him rethink himself and the future of the world. At this point Naruto's mentality was tested and forcibly matured to no longer just "beating up the bad guys". It just goes to show how detailed, dedicated and influential Nagato was.

It's just too bad this trait got thrown out the window later on with Madara. Nagato cared heavily about challenging ideals and wanted to educate the world to peace (even if it was misguided), but Madara seemed like he didn't care what people thought and just wanted to dominate and control. Don't get me wrong, when you really think about Madara's IT plan it's interesting and respectable, but I think his character's focus and motivations were terribly damaged by the way he was written. There was just too much time dedicated to showing his selfishness and craving for power (a typical villain cliche), and too little showing his reasoning and outlook for peace.

What do you guys think?

Obito acting like madara should have been the villain to attack konoha while pain was the final character but given a little more power

Pain was the best character. he was the first one to be the obvious main villain, before everyone started manipulating everyone else.

Madara not craving for power actually. What he need was IT and to do that sure he need godly power that came before IT(Juubi and Rinn Sharingan). No other ways around.

Yeah you saw Madara power as edo or Madara power after he absorbed Hashi's Sage mode. But he did all that because he need it and not bcus he power hungry. Edo Madara was out of Madara plan. He never want to revived as Edo but Rinn Tensei.

Go back to "he need power up because he need it". It was bcus all his plan failed, Obito betrayed him and Nagato derailed from the plan. When he revived in Rinn tensei, he lost his rinnegan bcus his real rinnegan used by Nagato and later Obito. He couldnt afford to fight all TB and SA without any enhancement(Senjutsu power) and blind. He will die again. He need that power up not bcus of power hunvry. Know the difference.

If all things according to Madara plan, he doesnt need all that power up he got in manga just Juubi power up only whats matter

I see what you mean, and yes those power ups were indeed needed. Kind of like I was mentioning, if we really think about it Madara's cause was deep and he did have moments of reasoning, but it just wasn't consistent enough for me.

There were too many moments where his focus was directed away from his goals to show he was power hungry, like:

- Madara fighting the SA instead of going straight for the jinchuurikis.
- When Madara played with the kages for hours and instead of getting to work.
- When Obito noticed Madara was forgetting the mission and instead playing with the Juubi.
- Constantly talking about how he loved battle and talking down on characters instead of talking about his goals.

Being written with his arrogant, battle-happy moments made him a less complex villain and more of a cliche.

I agree to some extent. Although, Nagato, Madara, and Obito was driven by their own ideas of peace, they share the same beliefs and sought their plans was essential to the Ninja World despite the world's objection.

Madara was inconsistent in the sense that he was evil at times, and idealistic at others. The idealism part sort of failed for me because he didn't seem like a guy who's seen a lot of messed up shit in order to come to those ideals. I have to agree with you.

Those borders ruined the moment for me though.

The example you gave here had nothing to do with power hungry.

He just like to show off his power or like to play around with weaklings. Arrogance like you said, battle addicted etc

Power hungry people was like Kaguya that still want all the chakra despite she already OP. Wanting more ultimate power when he/she already above everyone else in power. Or someone that whan to control eveything in the world for/to his benefits only.

I do not agree.

Madara seems that loves power and the fighting because he is a warrior grown in the war, and because, as he said himself, the reality is only an entertainment until it would reach its true dream.Yet, he still preserved human traits, most of which were brought fourth by Hashirama.

His motives we understood very well, during the flashback and when he explained to Hashirama and Tobirama during the war. Is a character very different from Nagato and Obito, he does not cry every 5 seconds, simply.

Then, Madara is even more sadistic in general, you can not really compare with Nagato.

Pein was suppose to be the ideal of God in the narutoverse (before ootusuki cam into play).

So it's only natural that he'll have appealing ideas.

this made me raise an eyebrow, seeing as though Madara possessed an inherent desire to challenge the status quo in order to bring a permanent end to conflict decades before Nagato or his teacher was ever born. I could be remembering wrong, but Naruto reading Tale of a Gutsy Shinobi is what actually got Naruto to think about the future of the world and what Jiraiya stood for, not fighting Pain.

Furthermore, Nagato's end game of using the 9 the bijuu to attack the ninja world could be construed as a campaign of revenge against countries he held deep resentment against and didn't care what they thought of him any more than Madara thought of anyone opposing his end game or the logic behind it.

It's rather hypocritical to try to delineate differences between the 2 characters where there aren't just because their personalities happened to be different. Madara's end game didn't involve callously murdering ppl on the kind of scale Pain intended to go to based on an assumption. He was for all intents and purposes a poor man's Ozymandias who quite never showed the lvl of intellect Madara had, because he was more of an intellectual sidekick. One simply cannot be considered some kind of intellectual revolutionary when everything they believed in, dead or alive, can be directly traced back to 4 other ppl.

Nope, Madara's character was much better.

And Naruto's mentality being tested, has nothing to do with Pain's character being good. It has to do with Naruto's character. Nagato pretty much had no influence on Naruto or majority of the characters in this manga, except for the BS he did under Obito.

Yahiko, was a better character imo.
