The three classic types of conflicts are always present in one piece, man vs man (straw hats vs cp9) man vs nature (luffy on drum island or any travelling time) or man vs god (luffy vs God Enru).

But the post modern ones, man vs technology man vs reality or man vs author, or even modern ones man vs society, man vs self and man vs lack of god NEVER appears in this style of litterature.

I can understand man vs author because breaking the fourth wall detracts from stories such as these but any sub conflict or even main enemy being different from man vs man would only benift the story, ill give an example. Water sevens a plot that is man vs nature being the climax of this arc is against agua Laguna and not a person and the story was both memorable and different leading into some peoples favorite arc EL.

What im saying is the main character aka luffy has a character who is caged into two types of conflict man vs man and man vs nature and makes him unrelatable to a certain extent.
He never is pitted against part of himself which all people are. He never has to confront society which on some level we all have to. He never has to encounter a situation that is out of his control on an absolute scale like we all have to ie fate/god. He never has to worry about or confront the lack of that absolute like we all have to. I wont touch postmodern as much because we all dont deal with existentialism daily.

Do you think the lack of diverse conflict makes luffy unrelatable?

I see your point, but I never tried relating with an anime character, since they don't usually have real life issues except probably friendship issues.

I am on mobile so i will make this quick.
Vs technology? BUSTER CALL AND PACIFISTAS.

Man vs Society? HATRED FROM HIS ENEMIES FOR EXAMPLE. ALSO HATRED FROM FISHMAN ISLAND INHABITANTS. HATRED FROM MARINES WHO WANT TO WIPE HIM FROM EXISTENCE. ACE HAD TO DEAL WITH IT TOO AS SON OF GOLD ROGER.

Man vs Himself? DEALING WITH GRIEF FROM ACE DEATH. FORCEFULLY SURPASSING HIMSELF AND HIS GRIEF.

Man vs Reality? WE ARE ALL DEALING WITH REALITY JUST BY LIVING.
Man vs God? NOT YET BUT WITH ALL THE OHRASES ON HOW D ARE GOD NATURAL ENEMY, I IMAGINE IT MIGHT HAPPEN SOON.
Come on, everything you mentioned is in the manga, except the 4th wall one. Casual reading or viewing may not show it as clearly but thats your fault. It is included.

@bold, are all in one piece.

Revolutionary vs WG = Man vs Society

The Ancient weapons and the fight over them = Man vs Technology

Robin/Sabo/Luffy all went through the phase where they needed the courage to live on = Man vs Self

Man vs Reality = Luffy punching the shit out of the Noble, and not caring for the "reality" of it. And him losing his teammates, due to those actions.

Lack of god.. hmm, don't think one piece is focused on religion at all.

Man vs soicety was resolved by jimbes plan and used luffy as a figure head him being different wasn't the conflict it was a plot point in luffy's story it was the main antagonist for otohime and a motive for the fishman pirates. Its a conflict that can't be solved with violence (jimbie solved it again) s
However that is a great example of man verses self and the amount of character development we got i would love to see it again
And man vs reality is appearnt in conflict not just existance

I wasn't referring to presence in the story the world of one piece is littered with amazing b plots i was referring to luffy have it be his main enemy and having tto solve it by his own measures
He knows how to overcone opponents but what of disfunctional crews or his short comings as a captain or un ending seas adrift with no food or the world progressing faster than he can
keep up and evwn the few examples we do result in tremendous growth for all aspects of luffy

And fighting over the weapons isn't fighting the weapons.

Luffy vs kuma and the concept of his lobotmy would be

Welcome back from boot camp.

Luffy is a character who is always looking for adventure. Never looking back, never faltering and never showing fear or any care for things that doesn't involve food and sailing. Thats why Luffy has a diverse crew with different interest to fill those gaps. For the longest time, Luffy was the only SH who didn't have a sad past but that changed with Marineford. Luffy relied on being stupid to be relatable to the reader for the longest time. Well...its more so being likable....

The gag of luffy's simplicity doesn't have to change look at calvin and hobbs. They were a kid and his stuffed tiger making morbid snow man but it dealt with death life reality god and social acceptance while still pandering to youth. Why cant luffy do the same.

Thanks now that im a marine the goal is to end the pirate king with one punch lol

I honestly don't think this manga is deep enough to make long themes out of all those. The ones we have had mentioned above are brief but they're there.

He was sea drift with no food, in one of the first couple chapters i believe.

Issue with the whole "world progressing faster than he can", is that he is the one progressing the world. That'll come when hes more older, like Whitebeard/Garp/Sengoku's age.

Well, weapons are gonna be involved in the last fight, and people like Franky/Kuma are also technology. And the World government's experimentation. Luffy has already gone against some of it at Punk Hazard or w.e it was called. And then he wrecked the Smile factory (well his crew did XD).

We have pretty much seen all those things, but i think you want Luffy to actually FOCUS on them and confront them. Which luffy won't directly do, unless they get in his way. Hes shown hes not the type to you know think too much about things.
