It will never surpass Naruto. If Kishimoto wants that, he is being delusional. There are a lot of sci-fi elements in Naruto already, even more after the war arc, it seems there is a shift from all the religious and beliefs inspired story telling to something more about science.

• Raikage chakra cannon
• Toneri highly complex engineering device on the moon
• Toneri puppets that were actually humanoid droids
• Ninjutsu bracelets
• Orochimaru high tech lab, it stopped having that rustic look

You can't roll out the possibility though, people said the same about hunterxhunter after yu yu haksho ended but the author managed to make hia new series more popular than the last.
