That novel is really weird. I've heard it calls Sai "Yamanaka Sai", even though that's his codename. Seriously, that would be the same as using your internet nickname with your family name. Also, that description of Sasuke's muscles haunts me to this day.

Either way, it's not on manga level of canonicity. And yeah, the parts of it I've seen indeed sound even more fanfic-ish than the other novels.
