I think Madara/Obito took the easy way to sync with the statue.
The energy vessel gave Toneri the ability to use the green energy in combat, and I'd say it's abilities are good. Join that with the tenseigan and you have a moon splitting power.

I feel like acquiring more bijuus to Gedo mazou would make the perks so uneven that it's almost unanimous.

I think Gedo can still use soul dragon and enhances your strength too.

I wouldn't say that. If used correctly, gedo is one heck of a weapon. Nagato and Obito both proved it in the manga.
