I just finished watching the movie and I'm wondering since it features Kuzan and gives background information on the Admirals. Was the movie or even maybe just Z cannon?
Z character is canon.because we know that the 7th shichibukai is the one who cut off z's hand.
It's non cannon. Pretty sure I read it somewhere that Oda said it himself (because of Manga readers, they would be wtf since they don't watch anime/film).
Tho, out of all films/specials, Z, Strong World and 3D2Y are written by Oda himself. Oda even said that he wanted to writte these stories in the manga, but haven't got much time (someone correct me if I am wrong).
WHERE IS THE PROOF TO THIS
OT: Z is Canon, the events of the movie are not.

In the chronicle of Z (which is a timeline of Z's life) its confirmed by Oda that the one who cut Z's arm became a shichibukai.
Link to this chronicle of Z?

There doesn't seem to be any official translation but its been discussed in other forums as well
The fact that this includes Film Z and Luffy defeating him makes me very skeptical to if it's canon.

So tell me, what does Oda gain by going into detail who cut off Z's arm and when it happened and also linking it to the only unrevealed shichibukai and releasing that info by two separate sources where he was directly involved in ?
He can only shoot himself in the foot by doing it like that if he doesn't plan to use it in the manga. Therefore it's 99% sure canon, the shichibukai just hasn't appeared yet.
If it wasn't important who cut off that arm Oda wouldn't have made a big deal about it. But apparently it's someone very strong with a cutting ability.
The same reason he goes into detail about fake Admirals and people with daughters who spend too much money in SBS. He revels in story telling. It was for the sake of the movie. Why'd he go into such detail with the other movies he wrote only to not involve them in the current storyline?
