He obviously didn't mean it in a negative way. He wouldn't openly bash about his own paring in an interview, especially after making a gaiden specifically about this pairing. There is a good chance was joking too...judging from his comment about Hinata's boobs.
Anyway giving Sakura a major reason, or incident like Hinata being saved by Naruto, would have made it contrived because Sakura's love for Sasuke happened over time. She first was infatuated with him, and that changed over time. Her feelings changed from a crush to genuine feelings of love.

Sakura's love for Sasuke has been inexplicable from the very start. Sakura's devotion to him was completely unwarranted. There were many ways that the plot could have accommodated the SasuSaku pairing but how it was done was horrible. While her devotion despite everything was admirable at the same time it makes you want to tear your hair out because she has absolutely no reason to have this level of devotion to someone such as Sasuke.

These two scans show just how futile Kishi's attempt at making Sakura's love have some sort of reason behind it was:

You asked me why I talked about SS and I said because I was replying to the OP. How is that not related to what you asked? I also don't see where I have gotten mad about my characters. Hinata's love didnt happen all at once. She goes from admiring him, believing in him, crushing on him, liking him then to loving him. Like Sakura's her love grew overtime but she actually had legit reason to love to fall in love with Naruto while Sakura sort of just did.

OT: SasuSaku would have been a decent pairing had it not been as sh-tty as Kishimoto wrote it. It had LOTS of potential and the best route in my opinion was to never even go as far as to have Sasuke try to kill Sakura and vice versa. What kind of all mighty love pairing resolves to killing each other? I sure hope Sarada doesn't earn herself another tomoe just from hearing their disaster of a love a story.

This is also shown in The Last when they play that scene of them as kids in the beginning. I didn't see any change in her feelings through the manga. They stayed pretty steady...which isn't a bad thing. But that's what's been shown. Yeah Sakura's feelings just naturally developed. It doesn't mean that's bad...it's just not so obvious.

I don't know about the whole Japanese responses but I can agree Gaiden ruined all of SasuSaku's headcanons and ruined the pairing. I mean I can get Sasuke having a mission but he was in the village at one point in time and that was the time Next Gen was at least 6 or 7.....so he obviously didn't bother to even stop by.

It took them 11 years just to get a proper family photo because obviously Sakura had no legit pictures of Sasuke or her together before Sarada or after to the point where she makes a family photo to keep Sarada happy which is even worse. They have no wedding photos, no family photos, no regular couple photos are anything. Sasuke wasn't that busy that couldn't even send one of his hawks for his own child. Smh

Naruto and Sasuke are true lovers tbh. Both will run to each others side in mere seconds but Naruto can't make to Himawari's birthday without a clone and Sasuke waited 11 years and WOULD HAVE waited longer had Sarada didn't follow them. Hell, "What are these kids doing here" rather than "Sarada....I missed you.." SMH

Yes, it's clear why she came to like Naruto but it doesn't imply her feelings happened all at once. The Last scene shows how Hinata came to admire Naruto not how she came to like him. It's pretty clear through out the manga that Hinata's feelings up until she was around 11 or 12 can't be exact that's when her crush became to develop then around part 2 can't be exact either she began to love him. I know you didn't but there actually was a change to her feelings which is why I like NH. It wasn't some idolization where she thinks he is perfect, she didn't like in a romantic way right off the the bat nor did she fall in love quickly.

Hinata's feeling snowballed.
