The hypnotic abilities of Kyōka Suigetsu make it a highly useful tool in combat, for
Aizen can create simple or complex illusions to deceive his opponents. For example, by creating a decoy of himself, or other illusions to distract his opponents, Aizen can hide his own movements and attack with impunity. His opponent will remain focused on the illusion until it is too late to react.[231][232] While the illusions Kyōka Suigetsu creates are quite powerful, those with considerable power and skill themselves may be able to note slight differences in the illusions compared to the real thing, even if they are not able to determine what exactly is different. 4th Division Captain Retsu Unohana detected something was amiss with Aizen's fake corpse, even though she did not realize what it was until seeing Aizen alive.[73]

According to the Second Mizukage, genjutsu fittingly falls under the broad category of Yin Release.[1]
Yin Release (陰遁, Inton, Viz: Dark Style or Shadow Style) techniques, based on the spiritual energy that governs imagination, can be used to create form out of nothingness.
This is frequently used to
create false images or to cause pain from trauma (because the body is led to believe it is in pain); however, there are plenty of other uses depending on the situation. They are not used as often as ninjutsu because they don't physically harm the opponent, but several characters have made themselves well-known for their great prowess with genjutsu like Itachi Uchiha, Shisui Uchiha, Kurenai Yūhi, Gengetsu Hōzuki, and Tayuya.
Genjutsu can also be used to manipulate others, similar to brainwashing by feeding the victim illusive suggestions, the primary example being Tobi controlling Yagura. However, there exists at least one genjutsu, Izanagi, that has the opposite effects to normal genjutsu, by changing reality to illusion and vice versa. Genjutsu can also be used for other supplementary purposes such as interrogating an individual by breaking their will.
Genjutsu is created when a ninja controls the chakra flow of the opponent's cerebral nervous system, thereby affecting their five senses. Those with special abilities like the Uchiha clan's Sharingan — which can cast generic genjutsu — or with high intelligence have an easier time executing and countering genjutsu.
Those under the influence of genjutsu will either appear to be unconscious or continue to move around under the pretence of the genjutsu. The latter is very effective in battle as a genjutsu user can make themselves appear to be somewhere else and attack the victim from behind or change the environment to make the victim see a flat plain where there is a steep cliff.
According to Shikamaru,
genjutsu that affects the victim via hearing is the most dangerous one as it can be done from a far away distance, enabling the caster to stay away from enemy range while casting their genjutsu.
Combating Genjutsu
To combat the effects of genjutsu, there are several options:
The ninja needs to stop the flow of chakra in their body, and then apply an even stronger power to disrupt the flow of the caster's chakra; this is called Genjutsu Dissipation (幻術解, Genjutsu Kai). This can also be done by an unaffected ninja by applying a sudden surge of chakra into the affected person.[8] In addition, tailed beasts can break their jinchūriki out of genjutsu in a similar fashion if they have a good enough cooperation, as seen in Killer B's case.[9][10]
Another is through intense pain not caused by the genjutsu and utilising the resulting pain to bring their senses back in order (of the first two options, the latter seems more effective in most situations, or at least is the easiest).[11]
Another option is accessible only to Sharingan wielders. Members of the Uchiha clan can break or see through genjutsu using their Sharingan. Breaking Tsukuyomi is possible with an ordinary Sharingan, but requires a lot of skill.[12]
Sharingan wielders can also use their dōjutsu to liberate each other from genjutsu. Through eye contact, they are able to literally insert themselves into each other's genjutsu freely allowing them to break whatever genjutsu it is that imprisons their comrade.[13]
The Byakugan is also noted to be able to tell when genjutsu is being used.[14][15]
Ordinary people can sometimes train their eyes (without Sharingan) to break genjutsu through unknown means, like Deidara.[16]
One can prevent a person from casting genjutsu using obstructive techniques like the Hiding in Mist Technique to prevent one from being trapped by an ocular genjutsu as Zabuza demonstrated against Kakashi.[17]
some forms of genjutsu like Itachi's Tsukuyomi and Shima and Fukasaku's Demonic Illusion: Toad Confrontation Chant may not be broken easily, either
due to their near-instant effect like the former, or their ability to render one unconscious and paralysed altogether like the latter. In addition,
one must realise that he or she is under the effects of genjutsu before attempting to break out of it. This can be done by observing the changes in one's own chakra like Karin's chakra-sensing ability.[19]

Itachi's prowess with the technique has
allowed him to alter the perception of time with ease within the genjutsu to make a few seconds seem like many days as a means to torture the target. This results in the victim suffering psychological trauma that incapacitates them for a considerable period of time. After Itachi used it on Kakashi in Part I, Kisame was surprised that Kakashi's mind was still intact.[3] Only Tsunade has been shown capable of curing this psychological damage.[4]

Upon activation,
Itachi rigged the eye itself so that the genjutsu would give the order "protect Konoha" to whomever was affected by it.
Itachi intended this to be used on his brother, in the eventuality that he turned against the village and assumed that he would have transplanted his eyes in order to obtain an Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan by then. The technique was instead used on Itachi himself, after being reincarnated and inadvertently using his Mangekyō Sharingan when encountering Naruto during the Fourth Shinobi World War.
Genjutsu: Rinnegan
Using his Rinnegan, Sasuke is able to cast a genjutsu strong enough to take control of the nine tailed beasts simultaneously. Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki stated that Sasuke can use this technique through a single glance. Unlike other genjutsu, this technique apparently does not subdue the mind of the victim.
It can also be used to cast the illusion of an attack onto a victim, resulting in its collapse and a loss of consciousness.
Genjutsu: Sharingan
This is simply the generic use of genjutsu as employed by Sharingan wielders. By establishing direct eye contact with the intended opponents, the user can lock them within a genjutsu of their choosing
in order to achieve various effects. These effects range from inducing instantaneous, but temporary, unconsciousness in an opponent[2][3] to forcefully extract any valuable information that they possess[4][5] controlling their actions[6][7] or to show memories.[8]
Using his Sharingan, Sasuke stares at his opponent directly in the eyes and they stare back. Then a shadowy figure of himself appears before them forcing them under a genjutsu. An image resembling his Susanoo appears in front of the opponent and grasps them as it begins "assimilating" them into itself. This breaks the opponent's will. Afterwards, the opponent is left incapacitated.[9]
Itachi is seen using an illusion that traps the victim in a dark empty space where their body is made of paper that burns from toe to head while the user is watching. The genjutsu will make it harder for the target to move properly. It bears a great resemblance to his Tsukuyomi, though it is used with the regular Sharingan.[10]
Obito's Sharingan was able to directly control both tailed beasts and jinchūriki, with his eye power being compared to Kotoamatsukami by Mei Terumī and Ao.
Kakashi could use the Sharingan to
hypnotise the target, making them make seals at the same time as he did, thus giving the illusion he could see into the future. He was also able to put multiple people to sleep with a single glance with his Sharingan, even shinobi of Anbu calibre.
Shisui was able to render people unconscious with a single glance from long distance with his Sharingan.[11]
Madara's usage could control the tailed beasts like Kurama, or
paralyse a shinobi with a single glance.
Demonic Illusion: Steaming Multistoried Building
A wide-range genjutsu (広範囲幻術, kōhan'i genjutsu, Literally meaning: wide-range illusion technique),
whereby Gengetsu, in conjunction with his summon, is able to manifest realistic mirages using the mist exuded by the clam. As it is impossible for observers to distinguish from the real thing through normal methods, this property makes the technique ideal for concealing the actual location of either individual, resulting in confusion amongst the opposition as their attacks are rendered ineffective and they attempt to ascertain the pair's true positions. However, in order to maintain the illusions, the clam must continually exude the mist from its siphons,[2] throughout the duration of the technique.
According to Gengetsu, the only method to end the technique is to defeat the real clam but as the creature itself remains camouflaged within the mirage, this is no easy task, even if the summoner is providing beneficial advice. While the technique is in effect, both Gengetsu and the clam cannot be sensed through traditional means, with the exception of contact type (接触タイプ, sesshoku taipu) methods.
It seems just unimpressive in NV because the characters have ways to counter it.
