Nah it's supposed to be like that. A full moon while Sasuke is crescent .

I like to think of it as Asura keeping his moon pie while Indra was hungry & impatient so he took a huge bite out of it.

Man I love microwaved moon pies.

I thought so too.

Or maybe they just fought on different days. They waited until theres a full moon or crescent moon.

That is supposed to be the sun. The crescent represents the moon. The fact is that they are both in a night setting which is why it is confusing but if you look at Naruto and Sasuke's hand seals you would see Naruto has the sun which is the same as Ashura's since Naruto is his reincarnate.

Firstly, the very basic conceptual evidence is that Yang represents Sun and Yin represents Moon. It's like opposite, day and night, sun and moon. If both of them were the moon, then the concept of Yin-Yang parallelism and opposite nature would be ruined.

Secondly, the seal Naruto received was bright colored whereas the seal Sasuke received was dark colored. If both of them were the moon, then Naruto's seal would be dark colored just like Sasuke's. The fact that it is bright shows it's the sun.

Finally, when Naruto and Sasuke touched the Sage's staff to receive power and seals, you can see that the side Naruto touches appears to be a glowing sun whereas the side Sasuke touches appears to be a crescent moon.

Anime mistake I guess.

Edit

May actually be a full moon instead. Would match the setting, and I believe a full moon reflects the sun light hence its brightness.
